We had the good fortune of connecting with AmyMichele Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi AmyMichele, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I am a workaholic! I work hard for others and harder for myself. Over the years I have noticed that if I don’t take time for myself, there isn’t as much of myself to give to work, family, or even me. The balance has been hard, and I will admit that I often work while on “vacation”. However, I would much rather answer emails from a beach with drinks on the way than be dreaming of getting away (and finding every excuse not to) from my office! So, I make the time, I force the balance, and I will say… I’ve never regretted it one day in my life! Work will always be there, your health may not always be. So even if you don’t think you have the time, or money is tight, I promise you that there is always a way to sneak away and that the work will wait while you do!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Nothing about building a business from scratch was easy, and very few things about horses are either… The reality of owning a boarding and training facility for horses (and their human owners) is far different from the daydream of horses I had as a girl.

I was told no a thousand times when it came to getting the money to start this business, but got creative and did a lot of negotiating and owner financing to get it going. I have an amazingly supportive husband who jumps on board with all of my crazy ideas. As the owner of his own construction company, he has been quite handy in the actual building of our property as well! 15 years later, I am very proud to say that Leatherman Lane is a well known and respected equestrian facility in our area.

Though we are a private facility, we are very proud to share what we built with the community at our annual Horse Lovers Day event. A day of horses, food, music demonstrations, shopping and more! Three years ago, we joined with the Go Jen Go Foundation of Charlotte NC to turn this event into an annual fundraiser to help those battling breast cancer in our area. GoJenGo is a local nonprofit, providing hope and critical support to families in the greater Charlotte area who are facing the financial burden of a breast cancer diagnosis. They help cover household expenses including housing, utilities, transportation, and other necessities while a patient undergoes breast cancer treatment and have been vital to those in our community battling this disease. We are honored to help in their mission and that the business we have built can give back in this important way!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I honestly don’t know where Id go in Dallas, as we never leave the airport when we fly through. I do however highly recommend the Capital One lounge when passing though! It is relaxing delicious, and friendly with a great view! We don’t even get out much in Charlotte as we work a LOT

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Be careful what you pray for… you just might get it! Along this journey I have prayed hard and worked hard for everything I have. Each no turned out to be a blessing and each yes turned out to be hard work and a big blessing as well! I thank God for the gifts he has given me and feel blessed to be able to share them with others!
