We had the good fortune of connecting with Auriana Siplin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Auriana, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to be my own boss and create my own rules. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit. So once I came to a point where I felt I had learned enough practical and business skills for the industry, I took a shot and started my own wig business.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
So, I am a wig seamstress and a newly licensed Texas attorney. Many would call it unorthodox, and it is! Right? Many people tend to choose one path and stick with it until they die. That was never a goal of mine. My abstract thinking helps me in both the wig industry and the legal profession, so why not utilize my full potential?
Was it easy? No. of course not. I started my business during my 3L year….right before graduating and taking the bar exam. I never really expected it to be easy; but I do hope to adjust and prioritize my time well enough so that I can ultimately excel in both professions.
So far, I’ve learned that all money isn’t good money. While I do want my business to thrive, I am not dealing with any and everybody just for the sake of making money. My peace is way more important than making a bad sale. Another important lesson I’ve learned is that no matter how much you plan, there will always be SOME-THING. So, with that, I let things prioritize themselves. I still plan, but I also go with the natural order of things when life tends to happen.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d take her to the black hair expo, which is a traveling museum that is soon to be in Houston. I’d also take her to POST Houston, which is a huge food cafeteria with lots of food options. We LOVE to eat. lol I still haven’t become fully acquainted with the city just yet, but these are definitely top two.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes! Absolutely. I’d love to give a shoutout to Candice Hendley Judon and Trenice Seniors. Both of these women were influential in my journey throughout the beauty industry. They cultivated my talent and STILL allowed me to develop my own brand, even while during our employee/employer relationship(s). The mentorship I received from these women was very organic. I still utilize the skills and lessons I learned from them today.
