We had the good fortune of connecting with Lolita Potter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lolita, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
April 2020, God gave me a dream with the name “In Living Colour”. At first, I didn’t know what was I supposed to do with that name. I just woke up singing the theme some to the 90’s sitcom and went on by my day! I was a teacher for 12 years and I loved teaching. I had found a school district that I planned to retire from but God had other plans for me! So to answer your question, It wasn’t at all me who came up with this business, it was ALL A DREAM!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I never thought drawing in school so many years ago would lead me to own one of the fastest growing Art Studio Franchise across Texas and eventually across the world.
Being an entrepreneur has not been easy! When I started, I made so many mistakes and lost so much money on this journey! I didn’t have anyone in my family to look to for advice because I’m a first generational entrepreneur. I had to learn by researching and reading. The internet had became my best friend!
In living Colour Studio is unlike other studios that you may have attended. We are a studio that caters and paint Black Culture! I fosters an environment where Black people can paint images that represent their identities — instead of the normal nature paintings like other studios.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Dallas offers a lot to do ,so picking my favorite is going to be hard! However, my number one place to eat is Tru Kitchens in Downtown Dallas. I go there at lease twice a month. I also love the Addison area because there is so much to do and lots of places to eat at.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First I give God all the credit for placing this vision in me! Secondly, my husband who sometimes don’t understand my crazy ideas but is very supportive of them.
My sister/best friend Tracey who has help push and encourage me through this entire process! Lastly my family and friends who was my first customers.
