Meet Elise Reynolds | Curly Hair Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Elise Reynolds and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Elise, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
One of the most important things I pray impacted his life is that his dreams are limitless. I have never pressured him to decide as a teenager what he wants to do with the rest of his life. I wanted to work in IT when I was 18, and I did. I also hated it. Thankfully I didn’t follow social norms and continue to do it. My son has watched me change careers (not jobs) 4 times in my life in the pursuit of happiness. I make sure to let him know that his parents will support him in what ever he chooses to do as long as it brings his heart joy and if it doesn’t than it is time to re-evaluate. Change can be scary but sometimes its necessary.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Choosing cosmetology as a career at 39 was challenging. I was in school with women more than half of my age, in a city where I don’t have any family or know many people and broke broke. My days would start at 4am, go to school for 8 hours, and than my other part time job at night until 9pm. On my off days they were filled with studying and working when ever possible. I can’t explain to you how much it was worth it. I knew this is what God had prepared me for and failing was not an option. The trauma I experienced with my own hair going to salons motivated me through school, knowing I could potentially help others with similar or worse trauma. I truly have a passion for helping people with all textures of hair and providing them with a safe space. A space where they feel listened to, comfortable in, and with someone they can trust. I want people to know that when they sit in my chair it is a place of peace and love. We leave all negative terms and notions about our hair at the door and never pick them up again. Society has taught us for so many years how to hate our own hair that I refuse to let someone talk negatively about it themselves.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people that I would have to credit for my success and want to shout out. Making a late transition in life to decide to do hair took a lot of support. From the very beginning it was my Family. During my time in school it was the countless women around me, Quia, Reeshia, Alexis, and so many more; I saw their hustle/grind, determination, and talent. And once I started my career my amazing boss Sarah, who was born to be a leader.
