We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla H. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kayla, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite quote is progress, not perfection. I am my own harshest critic. I am working on getting better, but that’s still a work in progress. I have to constantly remind myself that there is no such thing as perfection. Chasing perfection will lead you to overlook achievements and see how far you have come as a creative/individual. It’s a reminder that I am human and to allow myself grace.

I am most excited about my journey into sugar-free desserts. While most of my baking still uses regular granulated sugar, I have made substantial strides in my sugar-free baking adventures. It has been a lot of trial and error…sugar alternatives are not created equally. Sugar-free baking is all about trial and error. I want to provide a dessert that gives the customer all of the taste without regular sugar’s impact. I first started my sugar-free baking due to conversations with my boyfriend. Everyone loves sweets, but for those with diabetes or other sugar adverse health concerns, it’s hard to find tasty alternatives that satisfy their sweets tooth. I first started making sugar-free lemon cookies, and they were an instant hit. I have made plenty of lemon cookies since, and they have been sugar-free on request. From there, I ventured into chocolate chip cookies and then into cakes. My sugar-free red velvet cake is the star of the sugar-free desserts. The white chocolate cream cheese frosting is divine. I want people to understand that The Klever Baker is more than a name…it is how I approach baking. Since I am self-taught, I have to get creative in my designs and execution.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Between my family and friends, I have a great support base. It started with my mom allowing me to help in the kitchen when she would bake. Once I got old enough to bake on my own, she allowed me to make mistakes. Her motto was the worst that can happen is it doesn’t taste good. That fostered an environment of creativity. One that still exists to this day. My parents are a part of my test group. Whenever I want to try something new, I can always ship them desserts to try and ask for feedback. My friends also play a huge role in my success because they have trusted me to create magic for some of their most important life events. I have created dessert spreads for many bridal showers, baby showers, first birthday photoshoot smash cakes, birthday cakes, and wedding receptions. My friends are the second half of my test group. I love that I get to experiment and get feedback from various palates. Oh, I forgot to mention that my testers are highly valued because I do not eat sugar. So their feedback tailors how I use ingredients. I am very fortunate that I have amazing friends and family that support me in my venture.
