We had the good fortune of connecting with Tracie Harper and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tracie, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I often say being a hairstylist chose me, I didn’t choose it. Since I was a child I always love to style hair. As soon as my mom would give me a doll, I would instantly take it out the box and begin to work on the dolls hair. I believe that my gift and my zeal for the beauty industry has helped me to become the successful business woman I am today. As time went on, I grew more and more passionate about my career. I absolutely love what I do and I can honestly see myself in the beauty industry for the rest of my life.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been a licensed hairstylist for over 20 years. I’m a cosmetology educator, and I also work as a hairstylist in the film industry. I think what sets me apart from most hairstylist is that I’m versed in “all things hair”. I’m able to style every background, ethnicity, and gender. I’m a hairstylist in every sense of the word. I want to make sure that my clients feel special, loved, and cared for. I can say it was a long journey to become the professional hairstylist I am today. I’ve had to endure some hardships to develop the professionalism and dedication I have to my career. I’ve made a ton of money and I’ve lost a ton too over the years. Lol I’ve invested a lot of money, time and energy into expanding my brand. I often say you can’t take the elevator to success because it’s a long and steep stair climb. I think the most valuable lesson I’ve learned is that slow and steady really does win the race and consistency is the key to any successful endeavor. I’ve learned how to take breaks when I need them (physically or mentally), I’ve also learned how to encourage and motivate myself along the way. I forgive myself when I don’t achieve a particular goal but I also hold myself accountable for not reaching the goal if the goal was achievable. The best advice I could ever give someone is to keep God first in everything you do. Make sure you are your greatest competition. Success comes to those who work for it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I absolutely love music and food. Anywhere that has food and a live band/jazz you can for sure count me in. I’m also a kid at heart so Six Flags will always be on my itinerary of fun things to do. I’m fairly new to DFW so I’m still discovering new places to go dine, to have drinks with friends, or have some good fun with the kiddos.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, I would like to thank my Heavenly Father because without Him I’m nothing. Secondly, I would like to thank my mother for always supporting me, encouraging me, and financially supporting my dreams. Thirdly, to my children, they are my greatest inspiration. Being a mother to two beautiful children helps me to stay focused on my goals and pursuing my dreams. I want to be my children role model and I want them to be proud of their mommy. Lastly, I want to shout out all my beautiful clients for trusting me as their stylist and supporting my business and the Harperhairphysician™️ brand.
