We had the good fortune of connecting with Vinh-Luan Luu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vinh-Luan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The idea of running our own business came to us in a daze of frustration. Our day jobs were grinding us down with their aggravating decisions based on frail egos and greed. We were working for people who lead from a golden pedestal, far removed from the actual day to day experiences of the their workers. They outright fostered toxic environments that bled into our home lives. It honestly poisoned our minds and left us a shell of our selves. We began dreaded Monday starting on Thursday. It is very difficult to become our best selves lost in that sort of fog. So we decided that for our own sake, we needed to bet the house on us. And honestly, if we have to work for idiots, we might as well work for ourselves.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Japanese in the Anime Yankii logo translates to “Fall down seven times, stand up eight”. To us, this doesn’t just mean there will be struggles and successes. It means there will be A LOT of struggles with just a little bit more success. It may not be a lot of wins, but a victory is a victory. Success is long term and it will have its ups and downs. We’ve been hustling together in some capacity since 2002 so we’ve seen the world change a lot. And we changed a lot too; from coworkers to friends to couple to life partners. We had to be open to those changes and not be afraid of failure. Those seven steps back WILL happen, but we are good enough to push on for those eight steps forward.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The best thing about the DFW area is the wide diversity of cultures. For a local, it’s about being able to trust long standing food spots to deliver every single time. Taking in a bowl of pho at Pho 95 or crispy noodles at cash only First Chinese BBQ has to be on the itinerary. A quick stop by North Park Mall to check out the the ducks is a must. Seeing the contrasting styles of downtowns between Dallas and Fort Worth is really fun to witness first hand. For a road trip, let’s skip over all the Buc-ee’s hype and avoid the Wal-Mart of gas stations filled with People of Wal-Mart and head to Slovacek’s in West, TX. Shots fired, you heard me. Don’t @ me.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In marketing and business, a great idea can die on the vine if it doesn’t look good to begin with. A real key to our success has been Stevan Hass and his production abilities. When we plant our banner stand or hand out our sticker, we are making a statement about ourselves. And he takes the time and care to make sure we look effing good at every turn. Not only that, his genuine enthusiasm and kindness is infectious. Our success means his success; and his success means our success. We try to live by this old saying: To go fast, go alone. To go far, go together.
