We had the good fortune of connecting with Natalie Diaz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Natalie, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
My story starts off very intense but to understand who we truly are as a company you must first understand the darkness we transitioned from. On April 18th, 2018, I would learn that my daughter Layla (age 1) passed away.
I was depressed and became suicidal.
What would’ve been her 3rd birthday on 1–31-2020, I finally decided to attempt to commit suicide orally. I sat on my bed with a good amount of non-prescribed pills sitting on my tongue and a gallon of water in my right hand heading towards my mouth. When the water reached my mouth my body went into what I describe as a “static shock”. I dropped the gallon of water and the pills fell out my mouth. I was numb, frozen in sitting position and I had a powerful vision. Although I could not see anything I heard the words “you will live, and you will live with a purpose” immediately followed by heavy thoughts and a strong desire to start a clothing brand.God had spoken to me & on this very same day, I did exactly that and that would be the day SLAYLA came into fruition.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from others is Slayla’s story itself. We are a company with meaning behind the name and everything we do. Our company can identify with a lot of our clients and people in general whom are also struggling or have struggled with suicide or depression. Our story shines the light on unpopular topics that need to be discussed more.
Slayla specializes in luxury apparel and fast fashion. We work with an extremely talented team of designers with (5-20) years of experience from Los, Angeles CA – Hangzhou, China who are consistently working to create that next piece, the future of fashion.
Slayla just surpassed it’s 1st year in business and we have accomplished and gained so many amazing opportunities. Slayla just landed the biggest opportunity so far last week to style cast members on Netflix’s series ( Selling Tampa) with pieces from our brand for filming and photography. We are now also working with Celebrity stylist for Selling Tampa “Ratino” putting together their looks for season 2.
The second opportunity we just received is we will be styling a new cast member for VH1’s T.V. Series Love and Hip Hop and the cast member is “Rada” whom is also known to be the wife of famous comedian Michael Blackson. We are excited to see these beautiful women wearing our brand. My success is defined by how many people know my daughter’s name, so to witness a small piece of Layla being worn on film or photographed gives me so much comfort in knowing although she might not be here physically, her name will be kept alive with every piece that is worn from our brand.
Although we reached this amount of success in 1 year, I want people to know it was not easy. The most crucial advice I can give to anyone is KEEP GOING. It’s very simple but there is so much blood, sweat, and tears that hide behind these 2 words.
When you are tired, KEEP GOING. When you have lost faith, KEEP GOING. We all stand here today and where we are now because at one point in our life we wanted to quit but we chose to KEEP GOING. Had I successfully accomplished suicide, I would not be here today styling celebrities and becoming a world-wide brand.
I am a living walking testimony that you can get out of that black hole, get back on your feet, and chase your dream.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Although some people might consider this cliche, all of my success is strictly credited & dedicated to God and to my daughter Layla. God assigned me my destiny and Layla guides my heart, spirit, and mind to do what God set out for me.
