We had the good fortune of connecting with George Brooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi George, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born in Memphis in 1978. Growing up, I experienced a gambit of joys, trials, and traumas that shaped me into my young adulthood. During those years, marriage, fatherhood, mental illness, addiction, and divorce have lead me to the current day and Metta Association.
I started my nonprofit, Metta Association, when I relocated to Dallas in July of 2018. My newfound faith compelled me to work toward improving the lives of those in similar situations that I had been working to reduce recidivism, spread awareness regarding black mental health, advocate for manhood/fatherhood, and save lives.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Writing. I’ve always loved the notion of creating and forming something in your mind and birthing it in a form where it can be consumed and appreciated by others. Writing is the most accessible form of that expression other than the spoken word to me. The written word evokes weight and power. It can linger without being rewound or easily misconstrued.
I’m working on several writing projects including screenplays, as well as, producing film projects.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Honestly, I’d just let them shadow me a couple of days and I’d show them Deep Ellum and South Dallas. After that, I’d let them explore.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
