We had the good fortune of connecting with Malik Oliver and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Malik, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am from Russellville, AR and my background for church and God came from my raising. My mom and grandmother instilled in us the consistency of attending church and being active in the church. I started singing at the age of 3 and the rest was history. The church has helped me learn who I am and what my core values are.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

Been singing since the age of 3. I started out in the soprano section of my church choir and as I got older I moved from the alto to tenor section. I was trained by Yvette Wimberely, Cecilia James, Jermachio Oliver, and my mother, Karen Oliver. They use to work with me day in and day out. Which later led to me leading songs and directing my home choir ( the New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church choir in Russellville, AR).

Joining any industry is hard. You have to find your fit. You have to figure out how to get to the next level. You have to create relationships and build upon them. It really comes down to how bad you want it and how much are you willing to bet on yourself. In the gospel industry it is important to stay true to yourself and remember that GOD gave you this lane and as long as you continue to praise and worship his name the rest will be added. That alone leads me to scripture Matthew 6:33 “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

All in all I’ve learned that if I TRUST GOD, bet on myself, and remember why I have a seat at the table – I will always win.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

I love Uptown! It’s always a vibe and there is always something to do. I also like to go to Northpark and walk the mall.

If they were here for a week I would try to do these things:

Grab dinner in Uptown
Explore Klyde Warren Park
Attend a Dallas Cowboys event
Go to Pinstacks & Shenanigans
and just go with the flow the rest of the trip!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout GOD for giving me the gift and allowing me to glorify his name. My next shoutout goes to my wife (Brittany) and my son (O’Mari). They literally are my biggest fans. I would then like to shoutout my mom, Karen Oliver, for always making me go to church and be involved in church. Because of her I am who I am today. Shoutout my family and friends near and far! Lastly, a big shoutout to my church family (New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church) and everyone who just played a vital role in shaping me into the man I am today.
