We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Taylor, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Dallis Meeks (Co-Founder) and I started Wealth Between Us out of a desire to not only positively impact underserved communities, but because financial literacy is an urgent need.

As we matriculated through our Finance degree program, we reflected on our own experiences with money and how we noticed a gap in knowledge compared to our other peers. From here, we decided to take control and come up with a way to close the increasing wealth gap and increase wealth equity in a contemporary and innovative way.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The biggest differentiator between Wealth Between Us and other financial literacy organizations is that we are taking a modern approach to the way financial literacy is currently taught. We realize that students and young adults are inundated with information from social media, and media platforms alike. Because of this we have found that in order to foster the best retention and engagement of financial content is to show how the content is relevant in their world. Our curriculum is infused with pop culture and historical references to bridge this gap and to deepen their connection with the material.

Ultimately, we want students to have a fair chance at creating and establishing healthy financial habits that they can benefit from over the long-term, without being subjected to common financial mistakes and predatory financial practices. We are offering an opportunity for them to become informed, empowered, and equipped with the knowledge and skills to break cycles of financial struggle.

I want the world to know that our brand is one of culture, relevance, authenticity and integrity. Our name “Wealth Between Us” exemplifies the way we want students and young adults to feel when they learn from us. We want to offer a “big brother/big sister” environment, in which we create a comfortable atmosphere for learning and dialogue that is informed and unbiased. We are most proud of the impact we have made thus far with the students, schools, and organizations we have partnered with. It has been very rewarding to see the lightbulb moments and to know that we have made a sustained impact. This will be our legacy.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Dallas is always such a good time! Two experiences that are my personal favorite and definitely a MUST to experience are the Rodeo and the State Fair of Texas. Both are so much fun and the food is amazing.

Personally, whenever I travel, a trip is never complete without a good brunch and shopping. Kitchen and Kocktails come to mind for brunch, definitely a good choice if you like southern-style food. A couple of my favorite shopping centers are the Shops at Park Lane and Legacy West, both of whom have a great ambiance and are great places to visit especially during the summer.

For more leisure activities, I’m personally a huge fan of the fine arts and the Dallas Contemporary is a must-see museum. Additionally, the African – American Museum has such great exhibits to see and it’s located in Fair Park which is a national landmark where they host a variety of events throughout the year!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I would like to recognize our family, friends, board members, and advisors for believing in our vision and for being the driving force behind our development and growth. There’s no way we would have been able to accomplish what we have so far without their support. We are incredibly grateful!

Additionally, I would like to recognize a few organization partners, who have been instrumental to the development and rise of Wealth Between Us. The Thru Project headquartered in San Antonio, TX, is a phenomenal organization created to bridge the gap between foster care and adulthood for youth who age out of the foster care system. Thru Project was the very first organization we partnered with in March of 2020 and it has been a pleasure working with them and the youth within their organization.

I would also like to recognize the San Antonio Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. as they have also been early partners and supporters of our organization. Located in San Antonio, TX, they provide assistance and support to the local community through established programs and it has been an honor to work with them and help support the communities they serve.
