We had the good fortune of connecting with Oliver Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Oliver, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risk has played a HUGE role in my life/career thus far. For me, I wanted to excel financially, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. None of that could’ve happened without taking risks. Taking risks isn’t always some crazy “jumping off the cliff” activity either. Sometimes it can be deciding to sacrifice one weekend without your friends to read a book and go for a walk. Sure you may miss out on a memorable story you’ll hear the next day, but you get closer to finding your true self.
In this game of life, you only get one chance. There are no re-dos or resets. Living a life in a mental cage is not the life I would want to live. So, take a chance because the biggest risk you can take, is not taking any risks at all.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
So I’m in sales. Not any kind of sales, but in insurance (Yeah, I know.) But it’s very rewarding and it fits with my purpose on this Earth.
What separates me from others is the fact that I am willing to give up what I want to do TODAY for who I want to become tomorrow. I’m willing to miss out on the nights at the club or partying every weekend because where I want to be and who I want to become requires more focus and intention.
I got to where I am today professionally because I picked up on a skill that most people decide not to utilize… LISTEN. At first, I thought I was a good listener, until a few situations and conversations proved otherwise. But now I am able to have more meaningful conversations about anything with just about anybody. Getting here was not easy at all. But the reward has been great thus far!
You can be anything you want to be in this world – even yourself. Don’t conform to what everybody else is doing just to “fit in.” BE YOU and unapologetically you!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would start off by going to the AT&T Discovery District in downtown. There’s plenty to do out there. And after a good time of hanging out there, I would get on some motorized scooters and we just ride around the city. Maybe get some ice cream or something in Deep Ellum.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I became a bookworm out of nowhere since 2018. Even though there are a countless amount of people I can list (some being teachers, mentors, family members, and friends), I would like to dedicate a portion of my success thus far to several books.
1. Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill (Or ‘Think & Grow Rich – A Black Choice by Dr. Kimbrough)
2. The Obstacle is the Way (Ryan Holliday)
There are plenty more, but those two are a great place to start.
