Meet Micaela Pruitt | Candle Maker & Athletic Trainer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Micaela Pruitt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Micaela, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson I have learned in my business is to continue to evolve. There are so many businesses that sale similar products. How do you stand out? Find what pushes your sales and go!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
La Lux Candle Company launched in March 2019. Prior to this, I had always admired entrepreneurs but didn’t know what that looked like for me. As previously stated I truly believe in having multiple streams of income. This pandemic has definitely opened many peoples eyes to not put your eggs all in one basket! Professionally, I am a licensed Athletic Trainer. what I do! But in September 2018, I closed on my first house. My new expensive habit was purchasing candles! I had read stories were paraffin wax burned in excess could affect your breathing long term. So, I started to research the alternative to paraffin wax and quickly found soy wax. Soy wax is derived from vegetable soybeans versus paraffin wax that is derived from petroleum. This alone sold me on creating soy wax candles!
The world has quickly moved in the direction of trying natural alternatives to help heal and create a healthy lifestyle. So why not burn a candle that is healthier! December 2018, I created my first set of candles. My idea was to give my creations as Christmas gifts and receive feedback from friends and family! My first set of candles went to some close co-workers. Who in return, loved the candles and also were my first sales before launching! I was too excited! This journey has not been easy. I am so thankful to those who continue to trust and believe in the products I put out! Many of my customers love my soy candles simply because they get a good scent throw without a headache, which was an effect of burning paraffin candles!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love going to places with good food and music. The Daiquiri Shoppe in Grand Prairie is my favorite on the weekends! Pangea Restaurant & Bar has good upscale dishes and is black owned. A newly opened place I would recommend is The X Bar & Grill! It is ran by three black women in the heart of South Dallas! They offer a wide variety of food choices and just a great place to have in the community. Other than these great places I would definitely visit Deep Ellum and the Bishop Arts District for various restaurants, bars, dessert shops and craft stores.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It sounds cliche, but my mother definitely was my motivation to success. She attended college and was an educator until she retired. But, she always stressed to my siblings and I that she never wanted us to live paycheck to paycheck as she did as a single mother. Whatever our passion was just make enough money to live more than comfortably. As I got older I quickly realized that one income is not enough! Multiple streams of income is the key! So here I am at 36 , almost three years in as a small business owner and enjoying the ups and downs of running a business. For years I admired entrepreneurs, but didn’t know what that looked like for me! Making candles is definitely therapeutic and it’s a great stress reliever!
