We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea Mason and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chelsea, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

When I started my business, I knew I wanted to get to know my clients and provide them a safer alternative than tanning in a bed or laying out in the sun. I have dreamed of owning a wedding venue since I was a little girl and I saw my airbrush tanning business as a chance to figure out if I like working for myself while challenging myself to balance a business and finish my bachelors degree. I knew I wanted to be part of the wedding industry so the initial investment for a service based business like Globox is minimal compared to what I would have to invest in a venue.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve got to build with my clients. Spray tanning isn’t just about changing the outward appearance, because it can truly make a difference in our confidence as we walk out the door! I spent nine years in sales, both retail and inside sales before starting my business. I realized I wasn’t fulfilling my calling just meeting sales quotas. I wanted to truly connect with and support people. My business has allowed me to be a part of my clients most precious memories while helping them to be more comfortable in their own skin.
After changing career directions in my late twenties, I had to rediscover my identity. I had really found identity in the success of my career rather than who I was at the time. Finding myself was painful and sometimes just exhausting, but I’m so grateful I pushed through or I wouldn’t have made it this far in my business.

Lessons I’ve learned:
•Enlist help from experts when you don’t know how to do something. For me this is hiring a lawyer to look over legal agreements as well as an accountant to track my expenses and file my taxes.
•No is not personal and it’s not always the final answer. Timing is key and being strong enough to push through the “no” and “not yets” are what keeps small businesses alive.
•Organization is key, which I still struggle with but I’ve grown a lot in the past two and a half years.
•Nor everyone will like you or respect your work ethic and goals, keep going anyway

I want to not only offer people a safer tanning alternative, but to also bring awareness of how important it is to care for our skin. It’s known that 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the time they are 70. Having five or more sunburns doubles your risk of developing melanoma. Most insurance companies offer a free preventative skin cancer screening through a dermatologist each year. Early detection is key in fighting skin cancer.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love when my friends come to visit so this is an easy one. I typically take my out of town friends out for Mexican food! Of course Joe T. Garcia’s is a staple, but there we have some many great options in this area! The stockyards is always a lot of fun so I would take my friends for a drink at the new Drover and then we would make our way to Billy Bob’s to go two stepping.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people who deserve a shoutout when it comes to supporting me and this dream. My cousin, Amanda, has been a travel agent for over 20 years and started her own agency over 10 years ago. She gave me a lot of insight and some direction on what it takes to start a business. My friend Katherine, who also owns a successful business, was huge help in working through the business formation process and setting up the proper permits and tax practices. One of my life long friends, Kate, is a super talented graphic designer and she created my logo as well as my website. She will always be my go to when it comes to graphic design especially after she knocked it out of the park when she did my first private label product label.
