We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyla Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyla, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Consistency and discipline. Over the last few years I have realized these two things always went hand in hand. Whether it was me trying to switch careers, or getting back into fitness to be more active and live a healthier lifestyle I had do be consistent when it came to my actions and decisions I made every single day in order to reach the goals I wanted to reach. Also, in order to be consistent I had to make some changes in my daily routines, and eating habits that required me to be more disciplined day in and day out. This has also allowed me to coach my clients and athletes how important these two habits are in order to reach their goals and be successful.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a physical education teacher/coach by day and a trainer by night! Since I graduated from SFA I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my kinesiology degree and I decided I wanted to be in education. So I registered to start taking courses for an alternative certification but I unfortunately I got comfortable because I was in a manager role in retail, so I was taking my time. Once I started to get burnt out on retail I said ok now I really need to start getting my foot in the schools so I started tutoring in English which is what i wanted to teach because that would have been the easiest for me and the easiest way to get hired in the school district, but I kept failing the test by 4-6 points. After that I got really discouraged and was about to give up. I felt like I wasn’t going to ever get hired for PE or health, but it all worked out. On my 10 year anniversary at my previous job my high school basketball coach checking to see if I was who she thought I was and was looking for a pe/health teacher 2 weeks before school was to start. This reminded me that God will show up on time every time and to keep going even when you feel like you’re stuck and want to give up. I have learned to take opportunities that are presented to you even if you don’t know how they will help you at that time because you will always learn from it and you never know who you will meet along the way that can guide you to where you are trying to go. The opportunities to teach, coach, and train allowed me to do what I love which is to help people love them selves along their journey, and be a positive role model to the youth. At this point in time I know each day I feel fulfilled because I know I have made a positive impact or inspired someone to do something great for themselves mentally and/or physically and that’s why I love what I do.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Depending on the weather, I like to do outside things. I would definitely take them on a hike at one of the parks like Sansom Red Trails in Fort Worth or Cedar Ridge Preserve in Cedar Hill. A few restaurants I would take them too would probably Gloria’s because you have to experience their margaritas. Another one would be The Common Table, and Perry’s. I love to shop as well so we could hit up a shopping center or one of the local malls. On Sunday I would take them out for Sunday Funday. I don’t think the trip would be complete without mimosas, brunch, and Sunday funday in Dallas!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
James & my Dream Performance family! I started training with James back in 2017 and I followed him over to Dream Performance. He’s taught me a lot over the years from fitness as well as business in the fitness industry. James really got my mind going about actually getting certified as a personal trainer. It was always a thought in the back of my head, and people would ask me here and there did I personal train because they would see me working out all of the time, but I always told them no because I was just nervous about just putting myself out there. He really gave me the push I needed to go ahead and get my personal training certification by helping me see my own potential. Since then I’ve transitioned from a client at Dream Performance to a Group Fitness Instructor and personal trainer there. Also working along side the female trainers at Dream Performance is amazing because not only do we relate to a lot of things we also learn from each other. We have recently hosted 3 events “Dream Body Bootcamp” and “Bands & Brunch” and working with them has been so much fun. From just working out together, to being creative and seeing these events come to life is definitely a great experience and it is helping us grow. The support I get from all of the coaches, as well as being told things like “you are doing a great job”, to “I can tell this is your thing!” from the clients at Dream Performance really lets me know I am on the right path and I love it!
