We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamie Moon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamie, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
The biggest appeal of a career as a tattoo artist is the ability to make a livable career as an artist. The second, is the freedom to look, dress, and speak as I wish while working, without being deemed unprofessional. Tattooing is not an easy career, it requires your full attention that goes far beyond a regular 9 to 5, but is immensely gradifying.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I would describe my style as a tattoo artists as fineline black and grey, or soft color. I like to do a lot of earthy, nature, mystical artwork. I can also get down on Manga and anime designs.
Being a tattoo artist is the best, being a tattoo apprentice is the worse, and I say that has one of the lucky ones that has an amazing relationship with my mentor. A lot of apprenticships don’t have that luxury. Apprenticships are life consuming, all you do is work and for free, well for an education. It’s years of working open to close everyday for little to no income while you hone your skills. Tattooing becomes your whole life, and if you want to get anywhere with your career that aspect never changes. You miss a lot of time with friends and family outside of shop life. The upside is as you find your style and your skills improve, so does your income and selectively of the projects you take on.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a home body for sure, and my spouse is an excellent cook. Usually when we have out of town guests we spend time at our home and families homes, cooking in the kitchen together and catching up.
Almost all my friends are artists as well, in different forms. Musicians, aerialists, fire preformers, dancers, writers, comedians, so backyard hangouts tend to be a lot more fun than going out.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A lot of people deserve recognition in my success. Getting into tattooing is hard and requires a lot of sacrifice. If I wasn’t supported by my friends, family, and significant other it would have been impossible to make it. Then of corse there are my mentors. I learned to tattoo from Paula Diamond, but I also learned from the many talented artist that have also worked at or guest spotted at Diamond Tattoo Parlor.
