We had the good fortune of connecting with David Norec and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
For me as an author, it was all about my personal story. After my brother and sister died from complications of diabetes, through an answered prayer, God placed in my heart the idea to write this specific book to help children learn about the perils of unhealthy living and the benefits of exercise. I never envisioned starting my own business, but personal tragedy opened the door to something unexpected.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being an author of a children’s book has taught me one valuable lesson: Trust and be patient. I wrote the book in six months, but it took my illustrator approximately a year and a half to complete the illustrations. From there, it took about another year to obtain the finances to have physical books printed. And those finances came from winning a local innovation grant in which I had to present my idea in front of a panel of judges. An introvert by heart, speaking in front of crowds made me step out of my comfort zone. This process, which is still ongoing, has presented new and unique challenges which have “stretched” me to say the least. Doing the will of God involves a critical next step: Doing God’s will God’s way. And His way involves taking steps of faith. But only then can we walk on water.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live about an hour away from South Padre Island, and one of my favorite things to do is to fish. We’d wake up at four in the morning and head out to the Grapevine Cafe in South Padre for some Texas-sized tacos! By six in the morning, we’d be on the boat headed to some great fishing spots for speckled trout and redfish! By noon, we’d be heading back in with our fresh fish, which we would take to Blackbeard’s, a popular local restaurant. There, we would enjoy our catch cooked four different ways: blackened, fried, grilled, and some awesome, not-on-the-menu blackened redfish enchiladas! We’d walk off our meal along the coast while enjoying the relaxing sounds of the crashing waves. The day would be capped by watching one of the most stunning sunsets in Texas as the sun retreats behind the bay.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There is only one person who deserves a shoutout. That person is my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I am playing a part in His story, and if it wasn’t for Him speaking to me, the idea to write a book would have never come to fruition.
