We had the good fortune of connecting with Becky Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Becky, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
In my industry, I’ve seen a lot of contractors who don’t like to face issues head-on. They would rather pass a problem off to someone else than address it themselves. When I started my interior consulting business, I knew I wanted to be different.

I wake up at the same time every day. I wake up with a plan and complete it. When it comes to working with my interior consulting or remodeling clients, I’m there from the beginning to the end. Anytime an issue pops up, I address it head-on until it’s resolved. Sometimes, this means facing a client who is frustrated with a certain part of the process.

For example, I’ve gone in to remodel a bathroom and have found termites or mildew damage. It’s understandable why the client would be frustrated by this! That’s why I keep them closely involved each step of the way. When an issue arises, I don’t just let them know about it – I share with them how we’re solving it.

What should our readers know about your business?
If there’s one thing that’s certain about life is that it involves transition. Whether it’s moving off for school, getting married, or starting over as an empty nester, life shifts – sometimes by choice and sometimes not. Oftentimes, when those transitions happen, the spaces we live in no longer serve us.

I’m passionate about coming alongside people to create spaces they love to live in – wherever they’re at in their life. I do this through a simple coat of perfectly chosen paint, the rough woven textures of a jute basket, or a total room remodel. When I go into a space, I don’t see what it is – I see what it could be.

I think the hardest part of what I do is trying to explain to people that they don’t have to tackle everything at once. Sometimes, change takes time, and we don’t have to do everything immediately. So, I work closely with my clients to create a tailored plan that fits their schedule and budget while also making their dreams come to life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh, we’d be all over the place! We’d start off at Mule Alley in Fort Worth. There, we’d hop in and out of the boutiques and specialty shops. (I LOVE the textures and finishes at Maverick.) After that, we’d head over and eat our weight at Seven Doors Kitchen & Cocktails at the Grandscape. If we had any room left in our stomachs, we’d sneak in an ice cream sandwich at The Baked Bear before walking off our meal through the shops nearby.

The next day, we’d drive down to the Farmers Market in Dallas to grab some local honey and peruse the shops. We’d scoot over to Pappasito’s for the BEST Mexican food and hot sauce. We’d wind down our trip at Legacy West up in Plano and stroll through the specialty shops and stop to grab a bite at Haywire. I love their Texan menu and ambiance.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When I first wanted to start my own interior renovation company over 20 years ago, I knew it was an uphill battle. It was largely a male-dominated industry (and still is). The thought of a woman breaking into this business and being successful at it was rare. I doubted myself and didn’t think I could do it.

If it weren’t for my husband Bill, I don’t know that I could have. Every time I’d say to him, “I don’t think I can do this,” he’d lovingly look back at me and ask, “Well, why can’t you?” His constant support helped me through those early days when I transitioned out of my job and into being an entrepreneur. Whenever I’d get down, he’d remind me of the incredible clients I’ve been able to work with and help. He’s a wonderful listener and encourager. I know he feels proud of what I do and the creativity I bring to peoples’ lives. No matter whether I’m having the best day ever or am in a slump, he’s always positive.
