We had the good fortune of connecting with Nick Mann and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nick, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my business, TyypoPrints, originated when I was in college. I’m a graphic designer by trade, so the process of designing art prints came naturally. However, what didn’t come naturally was the typography side of design.

Typography is the art of arranging type to make written language legible, readable and appealing when displayed. This is the biggest core strength of TyypoPrints. Unfortunately, it took a lot of practice to get what was once my weakest skill to my strongest.

I felt deeply into quotes not only as a personal passion but now as a way of life. So it made sense to have that featured in the base of every art print of TyypoPrints.

Other motivational art prints weren’t doing justice to have around the house or office. They need to be powerful yet beautiful without the cliches. It is now making dreamers into doers to inspire others.

It is when others can believe and want to show is where TyypoPrints became where it is today.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
TyypoPrints makes dreamers into doers through motivational art prints. It’s the slogan and embodiment of the mission. It’s the full belief that every print holds a special message that can apply to many working professionals.

I’m excited about the process of hearing a well-said quote and beautiful visuals to combine into a work of art people need to have on their walls. I’m always amazed by the type of people who purchase a print and hang them in front of clients, employees, and other important people that helps them feel better about themselves.

It’s very humbling because a lot of these designs just started as sketches on scrap paper. But, on the other hand, it puts into perspective that ideas can come in any way regardless of how they started.

What set TyypoPrints a part of the competition was never doing the same design elements twice and caring about our customer’s opinions on what we should do next or differently.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite spots in Tacoma, Washington, are the museums and zoos. Chihuly Bridge of Glass leading to the Museum of Glass is an amazing experience found nowhere else. Beautiful and large glass artworks that took years to make all placed around to enjoy.

The Tacoma Art Museum is still relatively new, and the building’s design is modern and slick. The artwork frequently changes, so you can go multiple times a year and get a new experience every time.

The point defiance zoo has one of the most interactive aquariums I’ve ever seen: touching stingwrays and starfishes and many other harmless sea animals that are fun to explore. Many locations are based on regions of the world, so the Asian area has a lot of animals you’ll find in China or India.

The best restaurant in Tacoma is the Melting Pot. It’s quite expensive, but it makes up for it by having a giant pot in the middle of the table that you use to cook anywhere between appetizers to vegetables and meats using cheese fondue or melted chocolate to cover fruits.

It’s worth noting Tacoma is home to the Stadium High school, which is known for looking like Hogwarts. I had the pleasure to be a special guest artist to a class of students, and the doors to the walls and glass were truly out of harrying potter film.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shout-out is to JP Avila, who was my Graphic Design professor at Pacific Lutheran University. He helped me understand what it means to be a visual problem solver.

Another is Myles Biggs, a friend, motivational speaker, and author of The Unseen Work. He helped me find clarity and gave me the most effective business advice I’ve ever heard.
