We had the good fortune of connecting with Bryanna “BossladyBStylez” Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bryanna “BossladyBStylez”, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
That you have to work hard and grind, and lose sleep and give it your all to be successful: Although this is one approach, success comes to those who work smart and strategically. If it’s in your destiny to be successful, that’s what it will be. Work intentionally now so you can let your business do the heavy lifting but don’t lose yourself behind your business. That’s the key.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I knew I was different when I was a little girl and I’d have these dreams and visions about creating huge monumental moments. It wasn’t until recently that I realized I had started living my dreams in real life…
As a child I was bold. I hated coloring inside the lines, following strict directions, and could never just pick one answer on an exam- I had to create my own. Most of my teachers knew I was a social butterfly and they put me in positions of leadership so I could thrive. My first role being the class line leader. Let’s just say, I was one mean line leader. I accepted the role of leadership, control, and being the “eyes” and ears” of a team until one day instead of being in the front, I had to be in the back. The caboose. I was hurt, to say the least, but over time learned how important the caboose was. The caboose is the muscle, the see all, ultimately and equally just as important as the line leader!
I struggled in school being bullied, racially profiled and counted out because I was one of the few Black girls. I was different. I faced that trauma head-on by being an overachiever. I started playing the success game and in my mind this meant business. As I got older, my peers and teachers became a bit more diverse, and I started producing shows and events in high school with the goal of telling a story. I was determined to leave a lasting impression everywhere I went.
I’m proud that I’ve been able to work with some of the most influential women in my city, my team, The Royal Society and that I’ve been able to break racial barriers in Oklahoma with shows like Oklahoma Black Fashion Week by insisting on Luxury, Authenticity, and Creativity that include people that look like me and everyone in support of our mission.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Monday – Let’s mix it up Monday and go to the Contemporary Arts Museum, and hit up Sanaya for some sweet treats and Collection405 to shop til we drop. Cant leave without the Body Butter from “I’m Her” Tuesday- Tea downtown then OffThe Hook for some fire eatery. Then we’ll pull up on Chiink the Lash baby to get our eyelashes done.
Wednesday – Wine at Waters Edge Winery, and then get our hair whipped with some Prissy Perfection by Caprisha.
Thursday – We’d hit the collective and get one of everything from every restaurant.
Saturday – It’s up with The Breakfast Club with Bo, Egbe, and Jordan for workouts, head over to Black Walnut for a quick lunch, and stop by Cafe 420 for some fresh herbs and spices.
Sunday – Church with Mike Todd then We Brunch. Headed off to Parlor with Okc Black Eats for Social Sunday Brunch then crash Sunset Bar for the vibes. Then I’m cooking tonight so just head over to my place around 7 for dinner.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to give a shout-out to sister Tiffany. My sister showed me how to be a warrior and that adversity curates strength and courage. She always encouraged me to be my true, authentic self no matter how loud, crazy, and silly that looked like. She taught me how to be organized, intentional and thorough. She showed me that I don’t have to “have it all together” because no one really has it all together. She is the ultimate virtuous woman and she’s definitely my hero.
