We had the good fortune of connecting with Brionne and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brionne, how do you think about risk?
Risk has played a factor in my life since…well I can’t remember when. I have a tattoo on my right thigh that says “rebellion leads.” When I was in college I fell in love with this Sociology of Deviancy course. I always felt attracted to rebellious behavior, thought, doing the opposite of the norm. I’ve learned that’s a risk in itself, not adhering to what is taught or believed. I’ve always set out to believe my own ideals. If I mess up, or fall astray that’s fine, because it has always been my lesson to learn. I guess me being the eldest child plays a part in that. I have always had to make the mistakes first, and teach the lesson to either myself/others after. In my career risk can sometimes be effective or ineffective. I’ve always believed in having the power of time by my side. As long as I’m still growing in my craft I will take this risks, because I have the time to learn after them. Recently, I’ve had to take a hard, long risk with myself. I’ve had to ask myself the elevation I’m trying to achieve to reach my dreams. I’ve had to ask myself do I want to replace my bad habits with habits that will better my life/career. I found a new spot to think at, a lake. I’ve cried there multiple times recently trying to see if I want to take these risks within myself. I can honestly say it’s the biggest risk I might take so far.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been doing music for about 2 years. I just recently released one of my many songs, so I’m officially a songwriter now. You know I’m going through this journey, man. I always here “I don’t know anyone who raps like you!” or “I love your voice, it’s so different.” And sometimes I’ll sit there like “haha man I hate my voice, but thank you.” Everything is so surreal, sometimes I don’t know what has differentiated me. I’m just doing me. I am firstly, a poet, not a rapper. I guess that’s where my sense of flow comes from. I’m grateful to be different. I’m grateful to be an old soul (my friends tell me this all the time). I’m grateful to be from a household that appreciates real music. Like you gotta think about it, my mama had us cleaning the crib to India Arie & Tamia on Sunday mornings. So it’s just a different ear that I’m grateful for.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Haha! I’m the funnest person my friends know. I love to do everything, I’m like let’s go! Recently we had some of our clubhouse friends come down to Dallas. We went to a big Brunch in uptown, introduced them to some hood spots like Rudy’s Catfish Connection, Fry Daddy’s, etc. We even went to that arcade in the Colony, i forgot the name of it. Man that joint had an interactive game where I swear I was flying above the clouds shooting evil robots on Earth. I’ll do anything out of the ordinary or extreme. After my first trip out the country I told myself I would never be scared to do something again. I rode rollercoasters for my first time at 21. Haha!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As of recently I just want to give a special shoutout to a new addition to my family, Supa$onics. I mixed/mastered my entire new tape over there. It’s more than just a studio, I’ve developed a family with these guys. They’ve taught me a lot of ugly lessons about myself throughout the duration of these sessions, and I’ve been really grateful for them lately. Besides I’m forever grateful for my team always, and the people who consistently keep my spirits up.
