We had the good fortune of connecting with Mayra Serrano and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mayra, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to do something I was passionate about. I didn’t want my full time job taking over my happiness. I was uninspired and unmotivated but starting my business helped relieve my stress and kept my headspace at peace. I realized I was doing something that I loved.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love that makeup is not just used to enhance someone’s beauty but is also a fun way to relieve stress and create something new that isn’t considered the norm for everyday wear. Makeup can really push the boundaries of what is considered normal and I love that I can help create that for my clients, whatever their vision may be. There is no wrong way to wear makeup. One of my favorite things to do is to create someone’s vision and bring it to life. It hasn’t been an easy journey. I work a full time corporate job and finding the time to be creative and find work has been part of the struggle. The time, the energy and the motivation have been my battles through the pandemic. I realize now that I’ve had to take time for myself as well before I try to jump into things head on. Doing things with patience and being positive have really helped me. I want people to know that my journey has only just begun. The possibilities are endless. I hope to make this my career one day. I want to continue educating myself and learning different techniques to be able to work with anyone in the industry.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The Shops of Legacy West has some of my favorite dining spots. Kai is an Asian-inspired restaurant that has a variety of food options and a live DJ on some nights. It’s perfect for a date night or a night out with friends. Legacy Hall is located here too and it’s a food court where you can pick and choose items from different vendors. There’s plenty of options to fill your cravings. You have to try the duck fat fries from Roots Chicken shack and their friend chicken sandwich. I love getting food here after a long day of work and sharing food and having some drinks with my friends.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank my family and friends for believing in me and for supporting me especially through the pandemic. It’s been a struggle to keep a positive outlook through my journey but every single person has really been there for me in all aspects of my career. I would like to give a special shout out and thank one of my best friends, Angel Valles. He has opened up a new world of makeup for me that I never knew existed. He’s helped me expand my creativity by working with new mediums and creating adventurous makeup looks. I’m grateful for all the knowledge I’ve learned through his artistry.
