Hi Kristina, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting your own business can simultaneously be the most exciting—and terrifying—thing a person can do in their life. The best way to approach this is to be completely honest with yourself. Forget for a minute what your friends and family are telling you. Forget the dreams of making it big. Try to remove as much emotion as possible as it can cloud your judgement and lure you into a false sense of security.

Objectively look at the product or service that you’re offering and ask yourself what’s unique or different about it. Why should someone patronize your new business over the current ones already on the market?

At Witmer Group, we’re a full-service marketing agency in Dallas. We regularly help potential new business owners assess the market to detemine if there’s room for competition. Our in-house data scientist calls this the “3 tier pillar” of research:

Tier 1: Industry saturation—How saturated is your industry? How many companies are out there selling similar stuff?
Tier 2: Sentiment analysis—Sentiment analysis is what people are saying about the product or company. This will allow you to determine the strengths and benefits of the competing product or company.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have been fortunate to be surrounded by strong women my entire life. It took me a long time to realize that my grandmother’s strength trickled down through generations and built a backbone of silent confidence and steadfast courage. Helen I Smith was exactly that.

I appreciate the men and women along the way that nurtured my voice when I was still growing and coming into my own. And I appreciate the people in my life today that respect and appreciate my voice, my self and the journey of my life and career.
