We had the good fortune of connecting with Jake Aube and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jake, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
The common misconception about photography/videography is “all you do is push a button, anyone can do that.” But people don’t see what goes into a photo or video. What they miss is the hours of creative brainstorming ideas on paper, in our heads, gathering inspiration from fellow creators, hours of scouting locations for a shoot. They see the final result, but don’t see the dozens of other takes that happened to get the shot perfect. The hours of editing for 1 single photo, and video. There’s a lot of behind the scenes that go into photography and videography that people don’t often see. Most of the time its a one person show, so we are not only the content creators, we are also, the social media manager, accountant, marketing manager, etc.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a photographer and videographer out of Dallas, TX. What sets me apart from others is that I always strive to be different. I constantly ask myself, how can I stand out from the rest? I constantly scroll through Instagram of places I want to visit and there are thousands of the same picture, all telling the same story. I strive to capture a different perspective while still trying to tell that same story. I always get excited seeing people’s reaction to whatever work I post. It feels very rewarding knowing how long it takes to create it. I still have a long ways to go to get to where I want to be, but it definitely wasn’t an easy ride. There has been a lot of stressful times, sleepless nights. But having the passion and motivation always helped me push through the hard times. One of the big lessons I’ve learned is that no matter how good or bad the work you put out, there is going to be someone out there that’s going to hate it. Putting out the content that I enjoy and not caring what people think about me is what will ultimately bring me happiness, and get me to keep going in this industry.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friend was coming, I’d first take them downtown. Showing them the area, skyline. Then taking them up to the top of the reunion tower to get great views. Next take them over to deep ellum for some nice food and drinks.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out all of my friends, family and other loved ones who have always, and still, believe in me and push my everyday to chase my dreams and make them become a reality. Shout out to all of the other creatives out there that inspired me to not only start this journey, but keep my creative juices flowing.
