We had the good fortune of connecting with Mia Francis-Poulin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always been a bit of a rebel. So while I continued to grow in my professional career fairly quickly, I would come home completely drained of my creativity and dreading doing the same thing over and over and over again. So about a year before I left my job, I started planning my exit. When I left my corporate career, I did so knowing that 1) the timing wasn’t perfect (I had a 6-month old at home and I left very suddenly), 2) Navient wanted their student loan payment ev-er-y month, and 3) I knew how to write. I knew that I wasn’t cut out to be an order-taker, as was the case in my corporate writing career, so I knew I would take a nod from my father, an entrepreneur, and start my own business. So I started my business as a copywriter. At first, I took whatever jobs came my way because I needed to build the financial runway to sustain myself. Then, I started to niche down. Three years later, I own The Copy Haus, a copywriting agency for coaches, consultants, and online course creators. All we do is write sales pages, email sequences, and website copy.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Copy Haus is a copywriting agency for coaches, consultants, and online course creators to help them amplify sales with conversion copy that just works. At The Copy Haus, we believe: Psychological sales tactics to “trick” your buyers into action are gross. Your customers are adults capable of making their own purchasing decisions. Writing clearly and authentically is what will ignite sales — not the latest copy formula. Our goal is to take your heart, vision, mission, and energy and infuse that into the right messaging so that you connect with your audience. Sales, then, becomes a natural byproduct. We don’t believe in leaning into the pain. We don’t believe in obfuscating the reality of life. We believe in authenticity. We believe in clarity. We believe in empowerment. And we only work with clients who align with these values. Starting the business wasn’t easy or a straight road. I began my business online with zero startup capital. I had to build the road while I was driving on it. Now, it’s a multi-six-figure business with two employees (and a handful of contractors) who all make the world turn around. I’ve learned that my gut and intuition are powerful things. And that with grit, determination, and a sprinkle of manifestation, what I’m building here is limitless.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Our business is in the heart of downtown McKinney where there are all kinds of kitschy things to do. (I know, I know, Dallasites — McKinney is in the Metroplex, too!) Check out the comedy club down Virginia, or grab a bite to eat at any of the restaurants along the Square.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
WiNGS Dallas! Without WiNGS and the guidance of their instructors at the Women’s Enterprise Center, I would not be where I am today. They provided the guidance and support to help me navigate the parts of starting a business that are not in my zone.
