We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Rice and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexis, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I started my business it was a hobby that I did for fun in high school. I would sell treats at my job and do things for my family from time to time. When I started Jonson & Wales University in 2015, I watched my peers really pursue their careers outside the classrooms/labs. That’s when I knew I could do the same, I started taking my business a little more seriously! Graduating from Johnson & Wales in 2019 and relocating to Bedford, TX truly opened my eyes to MANY different opportunities. After being in TX a year or so my clientele really started to grow. From treats at my mom’s job to selling desserts in college, and now my own business! I talk to many people about it and knew that baking is what I wanted to do forever!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am truly proud of my ENTIRE business, Sweet Treats By Lexx LLC is me, It defines me as a person, my personality, and my creativity. I love what I do and seeing my business/clientele grow makes me want to push even harder. No business is ever just a walk in the park; we all have our ups and downs and our learning lessons but how you bounce back is what shows if you a real boss. When I run into an obstacle that I may feel is tough I have to step away from it, give myself time to process what I am doing and how I might handle the situation. I try to handle myself in a professional way in all aspects of my business at all times. Some lessons that I’ve learned while being in business is not everyone has your best interest, not all business is good business, and to challenge myself with every cake. When I say challenge myself with every cake I mean to make what they ordered vs what they got, remake cakes to see if you can make it better, never settle with where you are. I want the world to know that I am passionate about my business and my work. I put my all into every order I produce (cake, cupcake, brownies, etc) Sweet Treats By Lexx is my happiness, I want to make this bigger than what it is today. I want to be able to possibly open a storefront or be able to ship my products world-wide.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite place to hang out is Mickey’s Bar and Grill in Grand Praire, TX. They have great music, good drinks, and even better food. My friends and I normally go on a Friday or Saturday night; we always have a good time. It’s a casual dress code that makes the experience even better. Their staff members are always nice, a live DJ, and did I mention THE FOOD IS AMAZING!?
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I really want to take the time to shoutout to my great grandmother Murry “Mama” Davis. She’s the biggest reason why I am in the baking industry. She taught me how to make my best-selling dessert (cream cheese pound cake); without her, I would not be here or in this career. My baking mentor and good friend Claudia “Dia” Star with D’s Catering and Sweet Treats. From the very first event, I attended of her she has always been the sweetest, most supportive friend. She has truly taken me in under her wing and has taught me so much in my career, things on and off the turn table. I thank her for being genuine and loyal from the beginning and nothing but a great mentor to me. She is like my Baking Fairy God Mother
