We had the good fortune of connecting with Casey York and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Casey, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
For me, an essential factor behind success is Growing, Something That Matters. GSTM is not only a brand/business slogan, and it’s a lifestyle. I recall writing it out for the first time and noticing the sense of accountability it made me live up to, and the idea of “why wouldn’t you want to grow”, there is always an extra push when faced with hard times or difficult situations. When I was questioning whether entrepreneurship was indeed for me, something told me to write “Grow Something That Matters” down in my journal, and since then, anytime I was faced with a tough situation or decision I look to my brand mantra for reassurance.
Things that matter deserves attention, patience, and love, as well as persistence. The art of growing is an ongoing process. I believe my business’s success is that we embrace the uphill growing process every day with our outlook and intention, while inspiring others to grow something. Furthermore, my network of friends and family have always been so supportive. People every day remind me of how vital growth is, and I’ve noticed so many embracing that challenge—honestly, it’s just one of those things that come around full circle.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from others is my ability to adapt through pressure or situations and facilitate creative alternative solutions. My proudest moment is waking up every day with the opportunity to do the things I aspire to do, and I can only thank God for instilling in me the passion to do so. This journey of mine was in no way, shape, or form easy; but, I wouldn’t have had this go any other way. My process exposed me to so much, and all of it has been converted into fuel to push me past challenges.
A few key things that helped me along the way were getting in tune with myself in the space of loving, understanding, and becoming more comfortable with who I was at that moment and challenging myself to grow from that comfort. Setting goals and journaling have truly pivoted my life overall. Personally, I am developing a prayer routine and just maintaining a sense of discipline throughout my day-to-day routines, making sure I spend at least 30 minutes to 1 hour outdoors to rejuvenate for the day. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to always check in on yourself.
There are two sides to a story always. The concept of “Meta” means “showing or suggesting an explicit awareness of itself or oneself as a member of its category: cleverly self-referential” or something I refer to myself as “Growboy,” my own personal ego. To always be in tune with yourself and become more in the moment of doing so, you have the opportunity to express a solution to a deeply rooted problem that can be found by asking yourself or someone “why?”. Knowing and understanding yourself is impactful, deciding to grow from what you’ve discovered is life-changing.Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I don’t really step out that often but True Kitchen + Kocktails is often a go too. A brewing company is my absolute favorite called Kowboy Brewing Company, in the city run by De’Johne Jackson and Ashton Holmes. I’ve known these guys for a while (freshman year of college at PVAMU) and they are doing their thing in that space, @kowboy_tx.Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Special shout out to my parents, Cheryl and Terrance York. They worked their asses off and did what they can, always to make sure I can be the best version of myself. I Would also like to shout out my grandparents, uncles, cousin, and aunties for always pouring positivity when around me and being great models in many ways. Specifically are Isaiah Flanagan, Nick Freeman, and Ivy Walls, Charles Middleton, Cydney Boudreaux, Rose Feliciano, and the BIYDIY family which have been so vital to my growth over the past couple of years. Without these people, on various occasions, I believe I wouldn’t be doing and pursuing most of my endeavors without those cool, insightful moments we’ve shared. Lol, they are probably super unaware, but they help me so much. In essence the key to “Growing Something That Matters”, is having an awesome support group (nourishment) and remaining “Organic” throughout the Growth Process.
