Taking Chances: reflections on risk

Shoot your shot? Take a chance? Society bombards us with messages, phrases, examples and stories of how taking risk is the key to success, but is anything ever that simple? We asked some of the brightest folks we know to tell us about how they think about risk. We’ve shared their responses below.

I think about risk very differently now than I did earlier in life. For me, risk is not about being reckless or making emotional decisions. Risk is about being willing to move forward when there is no guarantee, but there is purpose, preparation, and faith behind the decision. To me, risk is the turning point in any success story. When you take a risk you’re putting everything on the line – where if you fail you take a loss, but if you win, you gain not only what you want but also the confidence to keep taking risks. Risk taking has been a part of my career. I went from a corporate job to getting my Interior Design degree to becoming Realtor, and now doing construction and Real Estate development. None of those pivots were safe and I have had to make peace with failure along the way. Read More>>
