We had the good fortune of connecting with Allison Beach, Registered Dietitian and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Allison, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had the dream of owning my own private practice for several years before finally diving in. The fear of failure stopped me for the longest time, but the stars finally aligned, and with the support of my husband, I decided to go for it. I did not want to always wonder – what if? I reframed that “what if it doesn’t work” voice in my head to “what if I am successful?!”

The itch to own my own practice really began as I became a more seasoned dietitian. I saw people in my personal and professional life needing a dietitian, but unsure of how to get started.

I began a job in dialysis early on in my career. This was where I realized there are many individuals that end up on dialysis who could have prolonged or prevented this major life change through dietary modification. I remained happily employed in dialysis for over 5 years, and then transitioned to a work from home job after starting a family. It was during this time that I began seriously considering becoming my own boss. I opened my practice (Allison Beach Nutrition, LLC) in January 2024 – while I was expecting my second child. Great timing right?! Well – my thought was it’s now or never! I began to realize life will always be in the way. There will always be a reason to say – it’s not the right time, maybe next year!

Although my practice is still only part time, this business venture has given me so much pride in being able to empower my clients. I teach them to speak up at the doctor’s office, and help them realize that it’s never too late to make positive changes.

The top causes of kidney failure are uncontrolled high blood pressure and uncontrolled diabetes. My practice primarily focuses on assisting those with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and those with diabetes or prediabetes. I also find joy assisting those looking to start the journey towards a healthier lifestyle. My goal is to partner with my clients to assist them in finding ways to enjoy mealtime, without stressing about whether they are eating the right foods. After all, food is meant to be enjoyed!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When asked as a kid, I’d always say that I wanted to be a teacher. Growing up, I had a family member who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. I learned at a young age the invaluable role that dietitians can play in improving the lives of others. I went to college knowing that I still wanted to be a teacher – but as a dietitian in the healthcare setting.

I have always wanted to challenge myself and never get complacent. After all, there is always something new to learn in the ever-evolving world of nutritional science. I am proud that while working full-time, I was able to earn my Master’s Degree, as this was not an easy task. I then went on to earn a board certification in renal nutrition (Certified Specialist in Renal Nutrition or CSR). It has not been easy to get where I am today – in fact I had to take the CSR exam twice to pass. I have learned that no big achievements come without some challenges along the way, whether that is a career, personal, or even a health goal.

Throughout my professional tenure, I have maintained a determined mindset. The same holds true when educating my clients. I like to meet my clients where they are at – and teach them that with some hard work along the way, healthy outcomes are achievable. When working together with clients, I act as an accountability partner to provide evidence-based nutrition support. I am in this field because I want to help others live their best life – no matter what obstacles are thrown at them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Favorite Restaurant: Mi Cocina – my order is the Poblano Chicken Enchiladas with a Mambo Taxi.

Favorite Grocery Store: H-E-B, a Texas staple. (I’m a Dietitian, of course I have a favorite grocery store!)

Favorite Place To Visit: Grandscape in The Colony! There are countless restaurants and events, but my favorite thing to do is get some Italian food at Quartino Ristorante, then visit Puttery to play indoor mini golf. (Just make sure to get a reservations for both ahead of time).

Favorite Hangout Spot: The Truck Yard – an outdoor spot with food trucks, live music, and there is even a spot for kids to play in the sand!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The support I have received along the way throughout my time as a student and registered dietitian has been invaluable! My husband (then boyfriend) has been there supporting me throughout my college education at Texas A&M University, up until now. He is ultimately the one that pushed me to go for it when it came to starting my business. The rest of my family has been wonderful in encouraging me to dream big when it comes to my career. I cannot thank my mom enough for all the times she has proofread my resume over the years!

I would also like to extend many thanks to the nutrition and food science professors I had during my undergraduate education. A special thank you goes to Karen Beathard – the former didactic program coordinator at Texas A&M that helped me land my dietetic internship (which is required to become a dietitian).

I lastly want to give a shoutout to my current and former colleagues, as well as my fellow DFW-based dietitians. I greatly appreciate the networking and community with you all that has helped me get to where I am today in my career.
