We had the good fortune of connecting with Genny Alvarado and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Genny, what matters most to you?
It’s okay to enjoy food! After losing 90 pounds and working through disordered eating, I realized how often I had villainized food—treating it as something purely for survival rather than pleasure. But surprise: it can be both! Baking sourdough has played a huge role in healing my relationship with food. It reminded me that bread (or any food) isn’t the enemy. There’s something incredibly empowering about making something from scratch and truly savoring it.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart is my love for nourishing others and sharing joy through food. My weight loss journey gave me a deep appreciation for what food can be—healing, meaningful, and personal. I’ve spent time researching about sourdough and gut health, and I bring that knowledge into every loaf I bake. People have told me the sourdough market is oversaturated, but I don’t see it that way. As a newer business owner, I’m able to give individual attention that bigger bakeries often can’t, and I stay motivated by creating custom, one-of-a-kind products. Get Bready with Genny is more than a bakery—it’s a reminder that food should nourish the soul, not just the body. Even the name of my business is a pun, that reflects exactly what my brand stands for: warmth, creativity, and the joy of sharing something crafted with intention. I built this brand to show that homemade, heartfelt things still matter in a world that is already onto the next big thing.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would absolutely take them to Dallas Farmers Market as someone who values homemade goods and community. Taqueria La Ventana has the best churros and El Mero Mero Tamalero has delicious tamales! Then for some time in nature, hike the Northshore trail in Flower Mound for some of the best lake views DFW has to offer. Meow Wolf in Grapevine is close by, and it is am immersive art exhibit that everyone needs to visit as least once. Then check out Cosm in the Colony to witness a massive LED dome that is DFW’s own little version of The Sphere.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I know it’s a typical answer, but my mom Melissa Schilling truly deserves the shoutout. She’s been by my side from the very beginning of my weight loss journey, always encouraging me and cheering me on. Growing up, I watched her pour her heart into caring for others as an ER nurse—she’s the definition of dedication and compassion. She even earned recognition as one of the top 100 nurses in DFW. When I baked my very first loaf of sourdough, she was filled with pride and let me know it too. She’s never once doubted my ability to create something meaningful through my sourdough business, and that belief has meant everything to me.
