Meet Alex (Dread) Overfelt | Tattoo artist & painter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex (Dread) Overfelt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex (Dread), why did you pursue a creative career?
I love it. I can’t imagine doing anything else. Ive been drawing since I was a kid and it’s so rewarding making people happy or creeping them out with something I created.
Plus I kinda suck at everything else.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Dark art is my main focus, dead faces, monsters, and dark fantasy stuff has always interested me and is my main focus with what I want to excel at. I’ve been drawing since I was a kid and took my art seriously when I moved to Dallas in 2008, doing art shows around Deep Ellum with other talented artists and musicians eventually landing a tattoo apprenticeship and career in the tattoo industry.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First stop would be Disturbathon. If you know you know! If club afterlife was still around that would be next on the list. Definitely would get some elotes from the lady in front of the fiesta grocery store, hit a few antique shops and go to a local grindcore show.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not be where I am today without the love, forgiveness, patience, inspiration and encouragement from a LOT of people,
The first artist that a big impact on me growing up (and still does) is Dennis Mcphail of Artist at large Tattoo, Wichita KS.
Jorge Perez, is the person that really inspired me as an Artist when I moved to Dallas. He’s so creative it should be illegal And he’s always a blast to paint with.
Billy Jack Gunter of Artistic Encounter Tattoo, took me on as a tattoo apprentice and never gave up on me.
Russel and Chris Rasmussen, took me in like family and and have been a massive support in my life.
Jeremy kitchens of Sleepy Hollow Tattoo and his family have been there for me anytime I need them.
Some Artistic influences for me would definitely be Jed leiknes, Chet Zar, Caravaggio, Frank Frazetta, Michael Hussar and Bob Ross
