We had the good fortune of connecting with Sandy Romo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sandy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I noticed that there was a huge need for Wildlife Rehabilitators in DFW. As our cities expand and grow, there are more and more wildlife conflicts resulting in the need for rehabilitation for our native Texas wildlife. I found it startling that there are minimal resources to help and no funding for care of injured or orphaned wildlife.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Ever since I was a little girl, I loved animals. I would go out of my way to help injured or orphaned animals of all kinds. As a child, my dream was to become a Veterinarian. As I grew older, my life went into a different direction becoming a military wife and mother to five children. I had a fantastic career in Real Estate and enjoyed being a homemaker, yet I always found myself helping animals in need as the years went on. My empathetic personality drew me to some of the most compassionate and interesting people in the world. I truly believe everything happens for a reason and in the moment of saving an animal, I met a Wildlife Rehabilitator who invited me to learn the ropes of the trade. After years of hard work and dedication, I became a licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator myself and discovered my true calling. I have worked with almost every animal you can think of but squirrels have always been my favorite. My journey was not easy, but I knew I would never give up. Any time it has gotten hard, I remind myself that I need to make a difference in the world and spread compassion. Kindness is what I believe to be one of the most important qualities one can have. I want the world to know that every single life has value. Every person has a purpose. I not only help animals, but I help the people that find them and so desperately care for their well-being. My goal is to also educate children about compassion and kindness towards animals and people. I am proud to say I feel like I make a difference in the world and I want to encourage others to find their passion in life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting the area, I would have way too many places to show them. Here in DFW we are so fortunate to have such amazing sites to see, diverse eateries to visit and unique experiences to enjoy. In Dallas, I would take my friend to the the museums, art galleries and shop the trendy neighborhood stores. The Texas State Fair is something everyone can have fun at. It was such an awesome experience for me as a new Texan. In North Dallas, every neighborhood seems to have their treasured spots. My favorites are China Town on Greenville where you can get some of the best Asian food around. Fort Worth is definitely a must check out spot known for its history and culture. One of the coolest places I have been to is In-sync Exotic Cat Sanctuary in Wylie. I have never in my life have been so close to the lions and tigers as they have there. Afterwards, take a quick dip in the nearby beautiful Lake Lavon. The single most important visit we would have would be Tongue and Cheek Ice-cream in Richardson. Hands down, some of the best ice-cream I have ever had.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to Cats in the Cliff cat rescue. Lisa Dennis and her dedication to cat rescue is quite impressive. After moving here from the Northern states, I realized there is an animal crisis here especially when it comes to cats. We need more spay/neuter programs and definitely more education and resources for pet owners. I was astonished to see the numbers of cats and kittens in need and the amount of suffering there is due to the lack of resources due to the high volume of need here. Lisa Dennis who runs Cats in the Cliff is at the forefront of the animal crisis working night and day saving lives. Whether her team is pulling cats from overcrowded shelters euthanasia lists, rescuing injured cats off the streets and abandoned kittens or helping with hoarding situations. I am thoroughly impressed with the sheer number of lives they save.
