Taking Chances

We asked some of the most interesting folks in the community to open up about how they think about taking chances and the role risk has played in their lives and careers. Risk is by far the topic folks talk to us most about and we hope the responses below will help shed light on many different perspectives.

I don’t believe in taking risks in the traditional sense. Instead, I believe in assuming responsibility. For me, it’s about owning the outcomes of my decisions—good or bad—and working toward solutions if things don’t go as planned. For example, if I invest $100 in something and lose it all, I take full responsibility for that outcome and focus on how to recover and grow from the experience.
That said, I wasn’t always this way. I used to prioritize security above all else. I stayed in workplaces that weren’t the best fit for me because they felt safe. Breaking that cycle took courage, education, and a strong community to support me. Now, I focus on making informed, thoughtful decisions, knowing that personal growth often comes from embracing responsibility and facing challenges head-on. Read more>>

Risk is everywhere. We’re swimming in it daily without a second thought. But when a new opportunity arises, our awareness of risk intensifies, and we can talk ourselves out of taking a chance. “Live a full life” is kind of a mantra for me and it keeps me grounded when faced with important decisions. Instead of overthinking or listing pros and cons, I ask, ‘Will this help me live a fuller life?’ It’s a question that cuts through fear and helps me focus on what truly matters. For example, starting my podcast felt risky because I wasn’t sure anyone would listen to it or if anyone would want to be a guest on it. I believe there is risk in basically everything we do. I’ve always said I will always 100% take a risk on myself. I know how hard I can work and I know the vision in my head. I see the reward that that taking a certain risk can give me and I will do my best to reach that outcome.
Taking risk has been a very big part of my career. There have been many times I put everything on the line to be able to place myself in position that will give me the opportunity to grow my business.
I vividly remember Fort Worth hosting NFR 2020. My business was about a year old, had very little inventory and not much capital to invest more into it. But, I saw NFR as an opportunity.
