We had the good fortune of connecting with Javier Villalobos and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Javier, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
A lot of the time it’s important to not worry about what others think, and to do the things that make you happy even if other people don’t understand why. Life is short, and every person deserves to find the things that they love in life and to pursue them.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Many people don’t understand why I take photographs of the things I do, but the majority of the time the photos I take aren’t for anyone other than myself. I’m excited about an upcoming photobook that I’ve been putting together for about a year, and it’s difficult to decide when it’s time to stop and actually publish. I just want to keep adding photos and editing it. I’ve learned that if you want to do it, you just have to get out and do it— even when you don’t want to, even when you shouldn’t, and even when you can’t.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Dallas is an awesome and culturally diverse city with the third most spoken language being Vietnamese— surprising for a place so deep in the south. If I was to show an out of town friend fun things to do in the city they would be an inundated with authentic Mexican and Vietnamese food, some of my favorites. Another thing that Dallas is extremely well known for is the nightlife and surprisingly good pizza. If you can’t tell all I think about is good food.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shout out my close friends who are always there for me, and vice versa. Life can be challenging and difficult but it can also be very beautiful and without them I’m certain I wouldn’t be around. Thank you, my friends— I love you all.
