We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashia Mosley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashia, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Having a successful brand / business is something I think scares a lot of business owners- new and old. It’s something that has to evolve and change overtime, but still solid enough at the beginning to take off. Starting out, I wasn’t really sure what I wanted my brand to represent. Yes I was a photographer, but so were thousands of other people doing the same thing as me. I realized it might be hard to stand out in such an “oversaturated market”, but then realized it’s all about how you market yourself, your beliefs, and what your individual business stands for.
Although I longed to be a wedding photographer full time, I knew staying true to myself, being real and vulnerable, and giving people an experience that was completely about them, as a couple, was something I wanted to shine through in my business. As a person, I strive to help others, do my part in serving the community, and being open and available to others when they need it. So rather than fabricating something that might not be as authentic just to capture a potential clients attention, I have found that over the last few years being my real-self on social media and throughout every aspect of my business is what has allowed it to thrive as much as it has. Of course I still have so much to learn and improve, but allowing my personality and beliefs to lay the foundation of my business has been one of the best things I could have done. I can promise you, though, there was a time when I felt I needed to follow exactly the same path that I saw others doing in hopes of being as successful as them one day, but of course you won’t get very far doing that. You are individual and unique for a purpose. We each weren’t meant to do the exact same things as someone else has because we are meant to pioneer our own pathway. Stay true to yourself and know that you are meant for great things and your business will continue to thrive the more you pour your own ideas, beliefs, practices, and all the other wonderful things into it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I took a huge leap of faith and went full time as a wedding photographer in May of 2019. Since then I have tripled my bookings after many months of investing in education courses, pouring more creativity into my sessions, learning how to market myself better and stand out as a business, and so much more! Today, I am most proud of the traveling opportunities I have been able to experience from Maui to Maine to Nashville and even more local areas like Oklahoma for both weddings and engagement sessions. I always wanted to be a traveling adventure, elopement photographer and I have slowly been able to get some amazing couples who are up for it! I will say, it definitely didn’t happen overnight and there was a lot of blood, sweat and tears that went into getting to where I am today. I just continued to invest in myself and business and be willing to learn and grow as much as possible. One of the biggest lessons I learned was that not everyone was your client and that’s ok. I know for most of us in the beginning, I would take any opportunity that would come my way, whether good paying or not, just to build my portfolio. Sadly, it can be hard to shake that mindset as you grow because you want to be able to book as much as possible. That’s where knowing your audience and ideal client come along. It’s wonderful to be able to help others even if it’s not ideally what you would like, but being more firm and learning to only take on the people you know are going to mesh well with you and your style is the most important! All in all, stay true to yourself and do what you believe is best for your business! Invest in yourself so you know that others can feel just as comfortable investing in you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love going to Legacy Hall for a night out to dinner as there are so many options to choose from! Other lunch and dinner spot favs of mine include anyplace with good sushi or ramen, Fast Furious for a fried rice bowl, a burger joint or Mexican food. I would also go visit some of the surrounding parks, like Arbor Hills Nature Preserve, or try to find new ones around the city to day-hike. Sweets are always a must, and some of my favorite places to go are: Creamistry, Hiccups & Churroholic, or Insomnia Cookie Thrift shopping is always on my agenda as there are so many surrounding DFW to check out! Uptown Cheapskate is a great place for finding name-quality brands for much cheaper of a price!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Very thankful for the photography community, in general, that I have found throughout my journey. I have learned so much for everyone that was willing to share their ideas and encourage me through mine. Shoutout to all of my family and friends as well who have encouraged and supported me through the process of starting my own business.
