We had the good fortune of connecting with Ciarra Monroe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ciarra, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When I think about risk I think about the saying, “The only true failure is not to try.” Things are seen as risks because of the possibility of failure or things not working out as planned. However, I have begun to look at failure as lessons instead. Lessons on what could be done differently, or maybe what should not be done at all. We learn from taking risks. As a single mother, I took a huge risk by leaving my six figure job to run my business full time. Although my job created financial stability for my son and I, I looked at it as just that, a job, not a career. The stress from that job affected my health negatively and in a severe way. It also did not allow for work-life balance. Although I was gaining financial stability, I was trading in my health and happiness for that.

Since leaving my job I have been much happier and healthier. However, I had to make significant changes to my lifestyle in order to stay afloat financially. I have had to endure family questioning my decision to risk it all to be self-employed. At times I wonder if I could have held on just a little bit longer to my job but at the end of the day, I know I made the right decision to leave. I took a faith and passion based risk in order to get to the next level in life. I know I would have been stuck in the loop of overworking myself and being unappreciated by my employer had I not decided to take a leap of faith.

With that said, risk can be very scary but very rewarding at the same time.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
There are two aspects to my business, I have the practical side which is my home fragrance and skincare line and the spiritual side which includes intuitive tarot card readings, spiritual candles, oracle decks, journals and etc. I started my home fragrance and skincare line first. I have eczema and started my business out of need. I had to start creating my own skincare products because I could not use products from the store due to all of the chemicals, dyes, perfumes and other irritants that are in store-bought products. This was before products for sensitive skin and for ingredient conscious customers were so readily available at big box stores. I started taking my products to work with me and my coworkers wanted to try them. They loved the products and encouraged me to start selling them. As far as my home fragrance line, it was very similar, I was working for a multi-level marketing company that sold wax melts. My customers would complain to me about the scents not lasting for longer than a day. I also noticed that the fragrances were bothering my allergies. So, I started making my own with the goal of them lasting longer than the popular brands. It worked! People loved my wax melts and from there I started adding products to my product line.

I started my spiritual business when I went through a spiritual awakening. I purchased a tarot deck to learn how to decode symbolism. I had no intention on doing readings professionally until a co-worker put the pressure on and kept asking me for readings. I also realized that in order to truly learn how to work with my intuition through tarot cards, I would have to do readings for other people and get feedback from them. To my surprise, it came naturally to me and I have been doing readings professionally ever since. It was a tough decision to go public as an intuitive/psychic reader because it was against the religion that I grew up with. Throughout this process I have learned to follow my heart and not to live my life based on what other people thought was best for me or other people’s goals or dreams. Although I was shunned by some, I was embraced by most when I went public with my spiritual business.

I have always been a very creative person and was already making candles for aroma therapy so naturally when I became more spiritual I started making spiritual candles as well. It was a great outlet for my creativity and the possibilities were endless as far as the types of candles I could make. Everything I make is pretty much something I would use myself. Due to my allergies and sensitive skin, smudging, which is a spiritual practice of lighting herbs on fire and using the smoke to cleanse the energy in a space and/or attract positive energy, was difficult for me becuase I’m allergic to smoke. So, I decided to create smudge spray, which contains hydrosols and essential oils from those same herbs mixed with water. It can be put into a spray bottle and used as a spray or even added to cleaning products, shampoo and etc. Smudge spray can be used in place of traditional smudge for people who have allergies or in areas where fire and smoke are not allowed, for example, at work, in a car, etc.

As far as my oracle decks, I started making my own because of the lack of diversity in decks that were being sold by big publishers. I wanted to offer more diversity and more realistic messages in my cards and luckily, other readers were looking for similar decks. Even though as a self-published creator, I had to charge more than the average price for decks, customers still saw the value in purchasing from me because of the more personalized feel that you get from smaller creators. Eventually, when I got comfortable enough, I started a YouTube channel and a blog to teach other creators how to create products as well. I love sharing knowledge with others.

It was not easy to put myself out there for fear of judgement and not wanting to promote myself. It felt weird to talk about myself and my products. However, with encouragement from my customers, family and friends I eventually did it. It still makes me a bit nervous but I push through that and keep going because it’s necessary! I pride myself in quality and great customer service and I am grateful that my customers can attest to that!

Some of the lessons I had to learn were to not over work myself. I was so used to doing that in the corporate world, it was hard to pace myself when I started working on my business full time. I had to learn to pace myslef so I did not get burned out. I had to learn how to be confident in myself and how to pick myself up and keep going when I took a loss in business. It’s about tenacity, things won’t always go as planned but being flexible will go a long way. I had to learn it is ok to be proud of my work and speak positively about myself and my business because it’s the truth! I had to learn how to block out negativity while taking heed to constructive criticism and direction from others. It’s definitely a balancing act for sure. There are times when I think it would be easier to go back to the corporate world but easier does not mean happier. I do however, use things that I have learned from being employed in my own business today. I used to look at my job as on the job training for when I started doing my own business full time. Staying grateful and having some sort of belief system that helps to keep you motivated and pick you up when you feel down is definitely something I would tell people to make sure they have. Building relationships is important too. Sometimes it’s not what you know, it’s who you know!

I want people to know that my brand is authentic. I am a genuine creator who cares about the needs of my customers and clients. I put my heart and soul into my products and my clients. I create products that I need for myself and to solve problems, to make life better, easier, happier. I take any suffering and pain that I may have and figure out how to help others who may be experiencing the same thing. Quality is far more important than quantity to me. I want people to love and enjoy my products and services and feel good that they invested in them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were to visit DFW I’d want to mix it up as far as activities. I’d want to party a little and have fun but also do things that are educational as well. There is plenty to eat in Texas and some very aesthetically pleasing restaurants but I’d mainly be focused on the flavor of the food. To give them a nice experience I’d definitely take them to the revolving restaurant at Dallas Reunion Tower. It would be cool for them to get a 360 view of Dallas while dining. I’d also take them to Kitchen and Kocktails for nice southern food or LoLo’s Chicken and Waffles. Since we are in Texas I’d also take them to my favorite Mexican restaurant which is Papasitos Cantina. For the Sea Food Lovers, I’d take the to Pappadeaux.

We would also go on a Wine tour in Grapevine and to visit the Botanical Gardens. If there were any children with us we would go to the Perot Museum or to the Dallas Aquarium.

If it were around the time of the State Fair of course we’d go to the State Fair, in particularly on the day where the Grambling vs Prairie View football game were taking place. Everything else would depend on the season. There are different events based on the season or holidays. There are Christmas light shows and vendor events during Christmas. Costume parties and events at various clubs and lounges during Holloween, for ex. Spinderella’s Annual Boo Bash. There are Cowboys games during football season. Various concerts and tours come into town often.

The bottom line is we would definitely have several activities that could keep us busy during the week and nice hotels to relax at as well.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout my co-workers. Even though I am no longer employed, they helped me build confidence in myself and my products by supporting when I first started making my own products and doing intuitive readings. They did not hesitate to purchase products from me and encourage me to keep going, they even helped spread the word about my business through word of mouth and passing out samples for me. I love you all!

I would also like to thank my family and friends who have been very supportive! Especially my sister, Qua and my step father Ed and my grandmother Ivory! I would like to thank my friend Adanna for her encouragement and support. She has shouted me out on several occasions and understands the spiritual side of my business as she is a spiritualist as well and a darn good one!

Thank you to all of my customers, especially my repeat customers that have been with me since day one! Thank you for your kind words and your reviews and for trusting me. I appreciate you all so much!
