Are you a risk taker? Do you think you have a stronger appetite for risk relative to your friends and family? We asked some folks from the community about their approaches to risk and have shared their thoughts below.
Michele Hembree | Art Dealer
Fortunately and unfortunately, I’ve always been a risk taker. It didn’t serve me quite as well when I was younger because the risks were uninformed. I have always felt the urge to take a chance, and roll the dice. I don’t believe there is any other way to live. Even when the risk does not work out the way I hoped, the thought of what if, would kill me a slow death. I see most of what I do in business as experiments rather than risks. I’m always “all in”. One of my biggest fears is truly not taking advantage of life’s opportunities or looking back and saying WHAT IF. Some of my biggest accomplishments to date started with not playing the field like others and taking a unique path at a young age. There is certain risk on starting your own business at the young age of 17. Read more>>
Gracie Howard | Independent Hairstylist & Salon Suite Owner
Looking back at my cosmetology school days, I would never guess I would be achieving my career goal sooner than later. I didn’t think about how going in a suite meant you needed a clientele (I was young and naive, can’t blame me for not knowing too much, haha), but I knew that was the career goal. I love being a hairstylist and salons, but being in my own place where I can follow my own path and work in a space meant for me and my amazing clientele! Read more>>

I think just about all I’ve done the past few years is take risks. Risks to me , can go 1 of 2 ways… The risk is gonna either help me to simply gain an experience.. or its gonna help me excel.. Any risk requires confidence.. Confidence in yourself and confidence in GOD. Growth in itself requires some sort of risk.In order to “GET IT” you have to “GO FOR IT”, and anyone that knows me can attest to the fact that I am quite the ambitious girl. LOL Read more>>

I think about risk taking too much, and that’s what the problem is sometimes. When the opportunity comes to take that risk, it may never come again ; so you just have to take it at that moment. I have had my business for seven (7) years now as my second source of income, always having a primary full-time job. It wasn’t until I stopped thinking about the bad outcomes from the risk taking to what could be the freedom to taking any risk, doing my own business full-time now! Read more>>
Kilo Art of Fact | A dedicated MC & Chef
As an immigrant, the risk was always there, no matter what. So living with that as the standard helped me take risks easier. I’ve changed professions many times, jumped in and out of different fields learning along the way. I viewed every employer as a training exercise and learned as much as I could. I later used what I learned along the way and created my business. In a way, the risks are what showed me my potential. Read more>>

Taking risks enables growth, spurs creativity, and opens up new opportunities. I have been taking risks my whole life and if I hadn’t I would not be where I am today. When I was 17 I had the chance to play football at some D2 and D3 schools which was great. I risked losing a guaranteed opportunity to play because I knew I could play D1. Read more>>
