We had the good fortune of connecting with Genai Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Genai, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
“This too shall pass”

“This too shall pass” is a quote that whatever difficulty or hardship one is experiencing will eventually come to an end. It’s often used as a reminder to remain resilient during tough times, knowing that they are temporary and will eventually give way to better circumstances.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

As a financial advisor, I bring a unique blend of qualities to the table that set me apart in this field. Being a woman, an African American, tall, country girl, and a former professional athlete, I stand out in any room. This rare combination not only distinguishes me within my profession but also within my company, and I take immense pride in that.
Navigating this career path has been no small feat; it’s an uphill battle that many have faltered in. Yet, I remain steadfastly dedicated. Every new client, every retirement plan crafted, every conversation about financial literacy with a child ignites a sense of excitement within me.
The journey to becoming a financial advisor wasn’t without its hurdles. From grueling tests to daunting challenges, I faced obstacles head-on. My background in sports instilled in me a resilience that proved invaluable. Traits like grit, self-motivation, and a relentless work ethic were second nature to me long before I embarked on this career path, and I’ve carried them over seamlessly.
Despite the triumphs, there are inevitable disappointments. Rejection from potential clients, or witnessing clients mismanage their finances despite my efforts, are recurring challenges. Yet, I persevere. Stepping into my workplace every day, where I’m often the only one who looks like me, requires resilience. But I forge ahead, hopeful for a more inclusive and diverse future in this ever-evolving industry.
Along the way, I’ve gleaned invaluable lessons. Documenting every conversation has become second nature; if it’s not written down, it didn’t happen. Balancing work and life is essential—I’ve learned the importance of setting boundaries and not allowing work to consume every waking moment. And perhaps most importantly, I’ve embraced the power of teamwork. Asking for help and collaborating with colleagues is integral to achieving success and providing the best service to my clients.
I’m passionate about what I do, and I liken myself to the Olivia Pope of the finance world. While recognition isn’t my primary goal, seeing my clients thrive financially is immensely fulfilling. I don’t seek credit; I seek referrals and the satisfaction of knowing I’ve made a tangible difference in my clients’ lives, both on paper and beyond.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Shaunda Taylor-Brewer is not just my best friend; we’ve been inseparable since the 5th grade. When she visits the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area, I’m determined to give her an unforgettable experience. Given my passion for sports, our week together would kick off with tickets to catch a game, whether it’s the Mavericks, Stars, Cowboys, or Rangers, depending on the season. We’d savor stadium eats while cheering on our teams.
To indulge in some retail therapy and leisurely fun, we’d spend time at North Park Mall and the Galleria, perhaps even trying our luck on the ice skating rink. A culinary adventure awaits at the Star in Frisco, where we’d explore the diverse dining scene. For a breathtaking view of the city, we’d ascend the Reunion Tower and marvel at the skyline.
If it’s fair season, we’d dive headfirst into the festivities, sampling all the quirky fair foods and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. Being an animal lover, a trip to either the Dallas or Fort Worth Zoo is a must, where we’d marvel at the exotic creatures.
In the city of Garland, we’d wander through the renovated square, indulging in local eats and boutique shopping. A live show would be the perfect way to cap off our day.
A scenic drive to Rockwall promises serene views of Lake Ray Hubbard, accompanied by delectable dining options. And no visit to DFW is complete without experiencing the timeless charm of the Fort Worth Stockyards, where we’d catch a show and immerse ourselves in the cowboy culture.
Finally, we’d conclude our adventure with a tranquil stroll through the Dallas Botanical Gardens, where Shaunda can feast her eyes on the vibrant floral displays and enchanting landscapes, wrapping up her visit with memories to last a lifetime.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

My great aunt, Joan Patterson James, holds a special place in my heart. Since the very beginning of my life, she has been a constant presence, never wavering in her support and love. Whether it was junior high games or professional matches, she was always there, cheering me on with unwavering enthusiasm, the loudest and proudest of all.
Our bond goes beyond mere family ties; she’s been my confidante, mentor, and sounding board through life’s ups and downs. Our daily conversations about life and decision-making are a testament to the depth of our connection, even if we often find ourselves on opposite sides of the fence. It’s this unique dynamic that makes our relationship so special and cherished.
Her love for me knows no bounds, and I am endlessly grateful for her presence in my life. Joan Patterson James is more than just a relative; she’s a pillar of strength, wisdom, and unconditional love. I wouldn’t trade her for anything in this world, for her impact on my life is immeasurable and irreplaceable.
