We had the good fortune of connecting with Shun Foreman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shun, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
Growing up in Tyler, Texas, I observed my mother’s unwavering dedication and hard work toward serving the community. Her selfless efforts to positively impact people’s lives significantly influenced my personality and professional development in nursing. As a result, I felt a strong calling to pursue a career in the healthcare field to continue her legacy of compassion and service.

During my studies in human rights and social justice, I gained a deeper understanding of the high prevalence of health disorders like high blood pressure and diabetes in my community. It became clear that these health issues were biological and deeply rooted in social and economic factors. This realization further motivated me to create greater awareness about these issues and advocate for policies addressing these underlying causes.

As I continued my education and training in nutrition, I became acutely aware of the harmful effects of sugar consumption on health. I was shocked to learn about the close relationship between high sugar intake and chronic diseases like diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. Armed with this knowledge, I was determined to spread awareness and educate others about the importance of reducing sugar consumption and adopting healthier dietary habits. Through my work as a nurse and community activist, I want to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people in my community and beyond. Hence, I became the founder of Sugar Mode Off and a community leader for Sisters Breaking the Bonds of Sugar.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am the founder and owner of Sugar Mode Off, LLC. The concept was developed to help communities of color to understand how sugar impacts their health. Most people do not learn about how sugar impacts their blood sugar until they have been diagnosed with diabetes. My belief is that sugar awareness can help save lives in communities of color. I have been a nurse for twenty-five years. I was overweight and struggled with elevated cholesterol. It wasn’t until I learned about the history of sugar did, I begin to make the change in my health. I coach strategies focus on understanding sugar from a health and historical perspective. My clients learn how certain foods impact their cravings, mood and health. I am proud to have testimonials from those who have seen the positive results of our proven method. I have also learned that we are all capable of helping our community in some way and that we should never underestimate our ability to promote positive change. I want people to know that my trips to Sugar Land, Texas, to speak with the late Reginald Moore, and to tour the sugar plantations in Louisiana have helped me understand that sugar has never been good for communities of color. I have learned from a historical and health perspective that sugar has always been a problem in communities of color. Limiting my sugar intake has brought about a significant positive change for me. I want others in my community to know that making that one small change can transform their appearance, uplift their mood, and enhance their overall well-being. I completely understand how challenging it can be to deal with overeating or sugar addiction. It takes a lot of courage to acknowledge these issues and seek help. Please know that I’m here to support you in any way I can.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I prefer to have conversations over everything. We would probably have breakfast at Snooze AM, lunch at Flower Child, and cook dinner. I love libraries, museums, and discovering more about the history of places. I may not have an exciting itinerary, but I am sure we would have the best conversation ever!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to Shoutout to the ladies of Sisters Breaking the Bonds of Sugar. I am so appreciative that she allows me explore to grow, find solutions, and to allow my vision for Sugar Mode Off to unfold. Many the ladies in this community are so encouraging and inspirational to me. I want to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who has helped and supported me in my life journey. My family, teachers, mentors, friends, and community leaders have been a constant source of inspiration and motivation for me. They have played a significant role in shaping who I am today, both personally and professionally. I genuinely appreciate their invaluable guidance and support and am grateful for their presence in my life.
