Meet Kelly & Joy McCarthy | Owners of Sakta Provisions

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly & Joy McCarthy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelly & Joy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
For a long time, we didn’t anticipate ever having our own business! After we worked a combined 10 years in the coffee industry, we knew we were passionate and had a love for coffee and the community that it brings, but we didn’t think we would ever own a coffee business ourselves. We had hopes to someday work in coffee again but had put those desires on the shelf. Our thought process, as believers, is simple obedience. Our goal, personally and in our business, is to honor God in everything we do, so we left the timing and the plans up to Him. Around August of 2022, we felt like God started to bring those dreams up again and gave us vision for a business that would cultivate community and create an atmosphere for people to slow down and enjoy quality experiences, goods, and people. By December, we decided to go all in and leave our full-time jobs to launch Sakta Provisions! We have many dreams that have yet come to fruition for the future of Sakta, but we felt like our first step of obedience was our espresso catering cart.
What should our readers know about your business?
Sakta is a mobile coffee cart—we like to say “fine espresso catering”—that serves customized drinks at weddings, parties, conferences, community events and more! The word “sakta” means “at a slow pace; gently, slowly”. We are all about slowing down and enjoying quality people, coffee, and goods. In today’s culture, we are often rushing through life, with no time to slow down and we believe that true enjoyment is found in a slow pace. We want to create an atmosphere and a product that is worth slowing down to enjoy. We believe that good things take time and some of life’s best moments happen when we slow down.
Our goal is to someday have a coffee shop where this culture can be emphasized but at our coffee cart, we take the extra time to create an experience that embodies a slower pace, even at events that are in nature, faster-paced! We do this by customizing the coffee experience with branding, housemade syrups, high-quality products, and excellent craftsmanship. We make our syrups to keep our ingredients as whole as possible and to compliment our espresso beverages that not only taste delicious but are customized for each event we serve. We love introducing people to new flavors and elevating the flavors that we are all familiar with.
Starting a business is no simple task but we have felt so much grace over the process and have learned so much along the way! Neither of us knew anything about owning a business so we had a lot to learn. We went into launching our business with a posture of humility, knowing that we would make some big mistakes and giving ourselves permission to fail. We knew that we would not get it right with every purchase or every decision, but we made and still are making the commitment to learn from our mistakes and grow through them together.
For us, creating a quality experience to share with others is the primary goal before profit, and before being popular or busy. Sharing the sakta experience and using quality ingredients and machines is better than profiting from a product we are not proud of.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As coffee lovers, we have to include all our favorite coffee shops! Some of our favorites are Wayward Coffee Co., Crude Craft Coffee Bar, Fort Worth Coffee Co., Race Street Coffee, George Coffee + Provisions, and Native Coffee Co.
Some of our favorite places to eat are Coco Shrimp, Heim, Wabi House, Fixe Southern House, and Jimmy’s Food Store. Morgan’s Ice Cream and Pecan Lodge catered our wedding in 2021 and it was the BEST.
We are new fans of Pickleball and love meeting people at the pickleball courts all over Fort Worth! We have met some of the nicest people there! Courtside Kitchen is an awesome place to play in Fort Worth. We love the outdoors so walking or cycling along the Trinity River is one of our favorite pastimes.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many leaders in our lives who have supported, encouraged, and pastored us before our business was even a thought and along every step of the way. The mentorship and leadership from our friends and leaders at Mercy Culture has impacted our business and our lives beyond what we can express. They have developed us in courage and determination to step out in faith. AXL Creative Co. is a community that has given us permission to dream and has equipped and empowered us to advance the Kingdom of Heaven through our creative expressions. We honor and love them.
