We had the good fortune of connecting with Emilee Crowder and we’ve shared our conversation below.

What should our readers know about your business?
Starting a private practice is a lot of work! Especially fresh out of grad school. There are so many plates to juggle (& first, learn about)—marketing & SEO, creating social media posts, tweaking my website, understanding tax laws, networking with other therapists…& of course, meeting with clients! It’s overwhelming work, creating the practice of my dreams. But it’s also such fulfilling work! I love getting to work for myself & I love being able to work with my ideal clients.

I feel very proud of the determination I have held onto despite the ups & downs. It takes effort to get my name out there, so that potential clients can find me & other practitioners know about me. There’s a lot of uncertainty, as my financial stability depends on whether or not I have a full case load of clients who want to meet with me. But I have also felt proud as I’ve seen my case load steadily & consistently grow—the hard work I’m putting in is paying off.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that as I’m generous, the world gives back in like. As I’m generous with my time & suggestions by helping others who are starting off & trying to figure out how to get their practice going, I find that there are many others who are willing to help me. As I’m generous with my knowledge, sharing the names of contacts & resources with others, I find that I gain more connections myself. And as I embrace the abundance mindset—that there are plenty of clients out there who need me—I truly find that clients come to me. Being generous in this season of growth has certainly been beneficial.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ooh this one is fun! I love when friends visit & I love showing them around Dallas. The farmers market is always a go-to stop when people visit, I love supporting small businesses & it’s just fun that it’s year-round! As far as favorite restaurants, I’d definitely make sure we go to Loro & Nori Handroll, I think of those places way too often. I’d also take them to La Victoria for breakfast burritos, Terry Black’s to show them classic BBQ, & for a night in I’d grab some pizza from Zalat & cookie dough from Jimmy’s Food Store. I’d also make sure we went to Cafe Duro, Carte Blanche & Sadelle’s for cute pictures & morning coffee—& to rank the best chocolate chip cookies from each place (my favorite dessert). For drinks, I’d go a little basic & take them to Truckyard for a classic Dallas outdoor experience. Then we’d also stop at Pegasus brewery downtown, it’s one of my favorite atmospheres to play games in a chill & comfy spot. Oh, and we’d go to Eatzi’s to pick up stuff for a picnic & take it to Lake Ray Roberts swimming beach for a day in the water! Can you tell I enjoy eating? 😉 Other than that, I’d try to catch outdoor yoga somewhere downtown, at Klyde Warren if it’s happening there or at Westlake Brewery for their Saturday morning yoga. We’d also go to Cidercade to play games, to Bishop Arts for boutique shopping & to the DMA for a museum stroll. I love that there are so many different neighborhoods of Dallas, all with their own quirks & personality—it’s so easy to spend an entire day in each area! Dallas certainly has a lot of charm & plenty of things to do.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My old therapist, Aleks 🙂 I started meeting with her about six years ago—she was the first therapist I had in my adult years. I experienced a lot of self-discovery as I met with her & she was the first truly safe space I’ve had in my life. A couple of years into meeting with her, I was reevaluating what I wanted to do with my life—I had hit a career dead-end & wanted to go to grad school, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study. One day it hit me—Aleks had changed my life by providing me unconditional care & support. I wanted to provide that to others! So I decided to get my masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I owe it to Aleks, for showing me what it’s like to experience a safe relationship & helping me learn that I feel fulfilled when I am helping others.
