Meet Christina Bass | Esthetician

We had the good fortune of connecting with Christina Bass and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christina, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I came up with my business from being inspired when I was a little girl. I just remember being in the bathroom in seventh or eighth grade, arching my eyebrows with an eyebrow razor and charging my friends five bucks doing their eyebrows. I’ve always had the passion of making people look beautiful naturally. My business,, Sekani Skincare is named after my son Sekani. His name mean “joy and laughter” in Swahili. putting the meaning of his name with the vision of my business fits hand-in-hand. My goal when people visit, Sekaniskincare is to leave satisfied finding the joy in their skin after any service they receive from me. I want people to feel comfortable just being able to have a judge free zone, full of relaxation and positive energy is what I see when I think of the idea of my business.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As an esthetician student I am most proud of my dedication and perseverance throughout my entire program. I’ve had so many obstacles stand in my way as a single mother and with school but I pushed through them. I am only 10 weeks away from graduating and going to take my state boards and it’s a bittersweet feeling. The biggest obstacle in my program was getting clients. I moved here from out of state not knowing what to expect as a new esthetician and not knowing anyone. how I overcame not having any clients or not knowing anybody was just word of mouth, promoting myself, handing out business cards, giving out my Instagram page, making sure I’m posting content every other day. Some of the lessons that I learned while bring in school is no matter what you do never give up. TRUST THE PROCESS, and believe in yourself. Believing in myself was one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned while in school. I can’t say it came easy. Being transparent here, but I do suffer from time to time, dealing with self doubt, One day I just decided to go for it! I told myself that the next person that comes in for a service , I am going to just have faith in myself and do it. I practiced more on my peers, asked my teachers to check my work. Rinse and repeat. It was after all of this practice and building myself up that I started to see results and felt more comfortable telling myself, “You got this!”
One thing I want the world to know is always be open and optimistic. Always be willing to embrace change, constructive criticism, and whatever obstacles that may come your way. The reason I say this is because you will attract whatever energy you put out. Always be kind to yourself and others and it doesn’t matter how easy it is for someone else to do something, how long or tedious things seem, or how high the mountain is to climb. Just trust the process and see where it takes you. You may just be surprised.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A week in Dallas would look like staying at my favorite hotel the Thompson Dallas, for its mid-century modern luxury style. we can do dinner at either, Kessaku, Catbird, and Monarch top three best restaurants for dinner and upscale vibes. For brunch the next day maybe check out Ellen’s Restaurant in the West End. Have a mimosa with shrimp and grits or a latte with southern breakfast favorites like biscuits and gravy. Then take a walk at Klyde Warren park and visit the food trucks for ice cream hopefully catch some love music on the lawn. I Can’t forget about visiting the Star, ATT center and the art museums for some great entertainment.
Another exciting piece in Dallas to visit is deep Ellum for a night out on the town check out Freeman’s Cajun restaurant in downtown Dallas. There’s endless street art and murals while you’re at it head to Ruins for a night of dancing.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

My super smart two year old son Sekani Myron for giving me strength everyday this is for you baby, mommie love you . . My best friend Brittany and my sisters Lynn, Nisey and Nikita for believing in me on this journey. I can’t forget about Ogle School #55 in North Dallas, this is where my journey started.
