We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria Caruso and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maria, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe that the the bigger the risk you take the more potential you have for a stronger return on that investment. Whether be a risk within yourself, in others, in ideas, or in the simplest investment of time, you are likely to see a more profound reward. Sometimes that reward manifests in a moment of learning or self-awareness, but I have always found risk to be extremely rewarding.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My journey was nothing short of arduous. Being “different” is never easy, but believing that being “different” is of great value and pushing that value into the mainstream was certainly a great feat. During the past 25 years of my career, I have watched my industry evolve into a more inclusive and welcoming environment. Founding a ballet company in the late 90’s that believed in body diversity was something completely against the grain. Holding true to my values and to my vision that dance is for Every-body and Every-BODY has shown that change has been made in my artistic sphere. While equity and inclusion in the ballet world still has a way to go, I am proud to have been one of the pioneers who fought for the right to love one’s body within the beautiful art form of ballet and to focus on the aesthetic of ballet and not the aesthetic of the body.

My motto is to live every day with Grace, Gratitude, and Love. With these central tenants behind you, anything is possible, and everything is worth fighting for in life.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Great question! I have been able to travel the world and be hosted by friends, and I have also been the host. My most favorite days consist of the following:

COFFEE FIRST – A relaxing morning coffee/breakfast together to review daily activities.
Outdoor Activity – An early afternoon of exploration outdoors, a walk, hike, or cultural experience
5pm Cocktails followed by a fabulous dinner out at one of the region’s top restaurants
An evening show celebrating the live arts and/or a movie or show at home.

During my travels on tour, I have most enjoyed my time meeting others, seeing, and experiencing the culture, and enjoying a great meal with great people. You can’t get any better than that!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I love this! I live my life everyday understanding that I am the sum of my experiences and that those who have nurtured my existence and creativity are at the forefront of my success. My husband, parents, family, friends, artists, and collaborators are among those who are responsible for raising me up, believing in my vision, and for taking risk on me and my investment in humanity. Without each and every one of these divine humans, I would not be where I am, and I am eternally grateful.
