We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Garrett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laura, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
When training with a personal trainer, people become very chatty. As a personal trainer, I have found myself counseling people on life issues as much as coaching them for fitness. Because my studio is private, the client’s conversation is heard only by me. I definitely didn’t expect counseling to be part of my role going into personal training. I am also a registered dietitian. When sessions are strictly diet discussions, vulnerability is less, so I don’t hear as much personal baggage, but there are still some of those moments as clients feel exposed. Clients tell me I’m a good listener and easy to talk to, which could contribute to the personal chats.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I decided to become a registered dietitian, I could not see myself being 100 percent effective to clients without also being a personal trainer. Good health requires both fueling properly and living an active lifestyle. Trying to tackle one without the other is why people often fail to meet health goals.

Most of my career has been solo in private practice. I love the freedom of scheduling, but the most significant challenge resides in finding new clients. Social Media has helped, but finding new clients remains challenging since my studio is private.

My approach to helping clients achieve personal health goals accommodates individual needs. Not everyone lives nearby. For those unable to train in person, I offer services through online live chat sessions and a new fitness app. In the app, training sessions are customized to each client’s abilities and workout equipment, even if they have no equipment.

I desire to help everyone learn to strive for a healthy lifestyle. With my guidance, clients identify areas in their life that need to change. Changes are never made all at once. Realistic, achievable goals are enacted. Once accomplished, we work together to tweak their lifestyle further to improve daily habits. Ultimately, permanent beneficial habits replace bad ones. The primary focus is long-term success.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m an outdoorsy homebody. As such, my home welcomes friends and family in a resort fashion. There is enough space around us to enjoy swimming, riding ATVs, birdwatching, and playing games – both board and friendly competition, plus we have animals to provide relaxation therapy. Laughing and storytelling around the firepit is an excellent end to a fun-filled day, but only after a home-cooked meal. We might even breakout the smores.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to my family. My husband is incredibly supportive of my endeavors, and my three kids, now adults, are my everything. As they have grown, I have witnessed them taking health knowledge they soaked up through the years to help friends eat better and understand the importance of being more active. That inspires me tremendously.
