We had the good fortune of connecting with Rowan Magennis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rowan, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
One of the most important decisions I made was to find a niche that allows me to explore designs and ideas that I am passionate about. Accepting projects and finding work that directly links to your passions makes a day of work feel like a day off.

The tattoo industry is incredible since it allows you to explore your niche in unique and creative ways. Joining this industry was definitely a choice that I will cherish for the rest of my life!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As someone who didn’t really look as though they belonged in the tattoo industry, it was initially incredibly difficult to find studios and artists willing to take me in as an apprentice and later on, Artist. I believe that this notion has definitely changed a lot since I first started, but the struggle to find the perfect fit has definitely made me more appreciative of the things that I have now.

I have always been a bit stubborn in working on projects that I love, which definitely helped set me up to find a style that I love to do. My favorite part of fantasy art is that, although a niche in its own right, it allows for many possibilities in genres ranging from epic/high fantasy to dark fantasy with pops of sci-to here and there. I can never get bored as there are always new environments/worlds, monsters/mythical creatures, heroes/villains, magical artifacts and props, to innovate and imitate.

With the forever expanding possibilities with regard to design, the pre-tattoo process has become something fun and creative on its own. I have been experimenting with AI, photobashing and 3D, but have been expanding my knowledge in concept art to further my skills.

I have also begun to experiment with turning process itself into its own art form through my Born of Fire Series on YouTube, where Story, design and tattoo process is recorded and integrated to result in short 3 minute episodes.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wanted to thank some of the people who never gave up on me, throughout my childhood, early to late teens and the last few years as I transitioned to a new country, some of which would prefer to remain anonymous. There were many people inside and out that I could not have succeeded without.

Thank you to Mark Ward (Iron Candy) , Chris (Sacred Ink), Rember Orellana and Francisco Sanchez (Dark Age Tattoo), for giving me a chance when I walked into their shops for the first time with a small portfolio and a massive dream. My family, friends and coworkers who supported my career in many different ways, and the clients who trusted me enough to create beautiful art for them.
