Meet Tekia Gee | Actress |Film & Stage

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tekia Gee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tekia, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always had a huge imagination and artistic nature about me. I was very expressive through my creativeness when it came to drawing, music, or performing art. As far back as I can remember. I was always dancing, singing, or trying to make somebody laugh. I enjoyed reading and movies. We didn’t have much growing up, so movies and books were my outlets. I loved acting out the characters with my little sister while we would have little talent shows. In 1st grade, one of my teachers, at a elementary school I attended called David G, Burnett. Got the class puppets for us to use during our story times. She noticed that I would always choose to go the puppet station and watched me come up with all type of stories that would have the whole class laughing. I must of really made an impression on her because she ended up invited the whole 1st grade classes to our classroom just to let me put on a show. I do not remember that teachers name. But I thank her and we need more teachers like her. So you can say, I’ve always had a feeling I would pursue a career in film and stage.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an actress and writer. For along time I would say aspiring. But I realized I am doing it. This is who I am. I get to tell stories, create stories, be the story. I love the art of performing both in film, and theatre. I believe what sets me apart is my passion and heart I put into acting. I am not doing it to be famous or count all the movies I’ve been in. I have officially been acting almost 7 years, and there is much, much to do and learn, That’s the challenging part of this career. It is hard work. Long hours, rejection, missed time with family etc. Acting is the fun part. But when learning the ins and outs. You have to stay motivated. I hate not getting a role. But I’ve learned it’s never personal. I have been blessed to train with acting coaches such as Theresa Bell and Troy Rowland, and Calvin J, Walker. Even acting classes can be tough. But I love that my teachers push me, and don’t give me the easy route. I say I want to be one of the best. Well I have to give my best. My latest work including films Heavy 2021 and Heavier 2023, A True Christmas, and TV series on Amazon Prime Smears series. Films to look out for will be Queen’s Trip, Creep, and A Miracle Christmas.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am born and raised in Dallas. So nothing really stays the same for long in the D. We are a ever changing city. A visiting friend, I would most likely take them to an area where we could pick out a spot. We could go the downtown areas, lower Greenville, or even Uptown. But also knowing me I would even take them to the Oakcliff area where we could have very HOOD time (LOL) dancing. I love a good chill environment. I am all about a vibe. So we would end up from anything from listening to live music, doing Karaoke. We have adult night roller rinks, and one of my favorite things to do is go to cigar lounges. I have been exploring different cigars. So a great cigar and some cognac can set the night.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, I will I say shoutout to my God, my creator, the most high. Who I am nothing without. I have faced adversity, misfortune, and trauma. But even through all that, God has blessed me with a good heart and spirit. I am a solider. I know more then ever, I have purpose.
Shoutout to my mother, Donna. Who is one of the main source of my strength. Who taught me to be independent and to never give up on yourself.
Shoutout to my village of aunties, uncles, and grandparents who helped me through different stages of my life when I needed them the most.
Shoutout my husband, my Gee, my best friend, for just being everything and more
Big shoutout and Rest in Power to my mentors Rev Chappelle, Rev John Currie, and Bishop Omar Jahwar who helped me with a lot of spiritual journey.
