We had the good fortune of connecting with Arjun Srivastava and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Arjun, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I always knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur, and there were many industries that interested me. Programming became a vehicle to work with different types of businesses. The name of my company is actually an ode to that. When people hear Biscuit & Chai, they easily get it confused for a cafe (which I might open one day), when in actuality it is meant to represent the perfect partnership between our digital agency and all types of businesses. My older sister, Anita, who is a co-founder of the company, was also a great influence. I saw her starting businesses at a young age, and that showed me what was possible and encouraged me to do the same. That along with a curiosity of how things worked, and a desktop folder filled with product ideas, it felt very natural for me to start my own tech company.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Biscuit & Chai is a digital agency that focuses on brewing great products – whether it’s enterprise software, mobile and web apps, digital marketing or social media advertising. With any business, there are always challenges and risks. Our earnest and dedication to our clients have helped us overcome many challenges. Since 2015, we’re proud of the strong and lasting relationships we’ve built with our clients. We’ve found that our approach to communication and problem solving facilitated trust and growth for both us and our partners.
We’ve worked hard to build the trust and growth we have with our clients, and have been lucky enough to sought out ways to give back. As someone who taught himself coding, I understand the importance of fair access to knowledge, skills and resources. Our company recently relocated from New York to Dallas, and back in New York we supported a local government and SBA sponsored initiative that provided grants to small businesses in the tech sector. We also partnered annually with New York City to employ high school students to build their skill sets, learn coding through our free classes, and get valuable industry experience before college. That program extended to parents with restricted access to computers through free night classes that our team taught. We are excited to bring the same types of programs and support to our new home in Dallas!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As relatively new residents of Dallas, we’re still exploring ourselves, but we’ve found a bunch of places we enjoy! I’ve come to enjoy the diversity of food options in and around the DFW area, and most of my itinerary would revolve around delicious restaurants.
For brunch, Tao Rice Roll in Plano is my favorite Asian breakfast option. If we’re feeling bagels, I’d take them to Starship Bagels in Downtown Dallas or Sadelle’s. Breakfast tacos at Rusty’s Taco is a great quick pick-up, as well. Otherwise we’d grab a coffee and delicious pastry at Carte Blanche! Dinner would be harder, but time is limited, and Japanese food is my absolute favorite, so we’d try to get a reservation at Shoyo, Tei Tei Robata Bar, Uchi, or Musume.
I’d definitely try to catch a Mavs game at the American Airlines Center (especially if the Knicks are playing). Other activities that are highlights for me include catching a show at the Dallas Comedy Club in Deep Ellum or a Four Day Weekend improv show in Lower Greenville, and an after-meal walk in Katy Trail.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife, Jen. She is my biggest inspiration, supporter and motivator.
