We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Dupiton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joshua, why did you pursue a creative career?
Because the beginning of my story was such a low place for me mentally, I’ve always dreamed of greatness. As someone who spent the majority of their life rejected as an outcast, I’ve always clung to fantasies of power & moments of awe. Literature and cinema have served the purpose of conveying what it’s like to embody something greater than the physical world has ever seen.
It’s in between these moments that, we can stand outside of ourselves and alter perception, or change the way we see our present and our future… not just how others see it for you, but how you see it for yourself. I feel as though it’s easy to feel victim to this world we’ve all been weaved into, but through the art of visual storytelling, I’m the weaver… I hold the pen. I decide if the heroes win or if they fall. After experiencing the weight of failure, regret, & doubt in my personal life, my dream is to now find the rewards of commitment, consistency, & sacrifice for my craft… and eventually, touch greatness.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As mentioned in the book, “The Untethered Soul”, we all have a voice talking to us in the back of our heads. I want my art to confront that voice. We each sit at the seat of consciousness as the observer of this voice, but we are not limited by its words unless we listen to them. My stories are for the uncommon, those out there who call themselves an underdog. This means, one who is thought to have little chance of winning a fight, or who is perceived by others to be weak. This perception can increase the likelihood of failure… or become a catalyst, the spark that keeps you up at night. The spark that won’t let you give up until the impossible is proven possible. Ultimately I want my stories to illustrate that hope can triumph in the face of any adversity.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My Favorite movie places are the IMAX Cinemark 17 Theater as well as Look Theaters for the vegan options! As a vegan, I have to recognize Spiral Diner & Pizza Verde! They are my top places for full-on meals. As far as drinks go I would say it’s a tie between Smoothie King and Jamba Juice, great vegan options on both sides!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My instructors during my time attending MediaTech Institute of Dallas as a film student personified what it means to inspire your students to be greater! Every lesson was based on the reality of real-world scenarios they were preparing us for. I’ve learned so much from them about workflows, editing, project management, and the business side of the film industry. Each semester we were challenged to elevate our work, network, and build our brands for the future. Monika Watkins, Brad Ruekberg, Eric Jewel, Weston Harris, Lee Shapiro, & Malcolm Morrison are among the shortlist of notably remarkable teachers who had an impact on my life and are also masters at their crafts respectfully.
