We had the good fortune of connecting with Whitney Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Whitney, what is the most important factor behind your success?
For me, one of the most important factors would be product availability and turnaround time. Because I am a small business that focuses on customization, being able to provide numerous types of products in a timely manner has been crucial for DFW Signs. I try to frequently introduce new products to keep up with other competitors and having a fast turnaround time has kept orders steady for me this year. I have a lot of people come to me and ask me if I offer a certain product and if I do not, I try my best to make it happen. Once I post a new product, multiple people usually order it as well and then it gets added to the list of things I am able to offer. The key here for these new products is customization. 75% of my orders are from other small businesses or vendors and everyone has really loved getting to help design their product down to the color, font, and shape of the signs.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
So DFW Signs number one focus is customization. My goal is to be the DFW stop for all things custom. Everything people need whether it is for their business, an event, or a milestone in their life, I would love to be apart of it. Some of the things I offer are personalized name signs for baby nurseries, and then acrylic or poster board baby shower, bridal shower, bachlorette, birthday, wedding signs and more. Lately I have been working on “Lets Get Social” signs for small businesses and vendors where it will have a QR code linking to their social media on the sign and then a business card holder below. These have been very popular lately and people love getting to customize them and choose the colors and such. What sets me apart from others is, I know I am not for everyone and I know there are people who can do more advanced things than I can, but I am the only person behind DFW Signs and the only person who works on orders and I pour my heart into everything I do. If something isn’t right, I am going to make it right. If I have to lose out on something to make it right, I will. I am the only person that responds and messages people and I try to get on and make videos talking about my business and letting people see a little bit into my life so they know who they are supporting when they order from me and who is behind the social media accounts. I never thought I would still be doing this, but I am so thankful to be able to.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite places to go in DFW is Grapevine Main Street. When we have family come into town, especially around Christmas time, we always end up on Main Street because there are so many activities and stores that are unique in their own way. As a small business myself, I try to shop small whenever I can. Another spot we have been going to recently that is a bit further out for us, is Grandscape in The Colony! They have made it so nice over there and it is the perfect hangout spot for people of all ages. We like to go to Andretti and play games, check out Scheels and then all the little shops in between. On a nice day, it is a great place to spend a few hours at. Puttery is pretty fun there if you are into mini golf and are 21/+, definitely a fun escape for adults.
Restaurant wise, I am always down for some good Mexican food! The warm salsa at Mercado Juarez in Arlington or Fort Worth is one of my faves! My husband and I really enjoy going to the movies also, you can usually catch us there on a day off when a new movie comes out. DFW has a lot to offer and living here our whole lives, sometimes we forget that, so it’s fun to show people around when they come down.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
At the end of the day, I would not be able to do any of this without the help and support of my husband, Cesar. From day one when I got started, he would drive all around DFW with me during 2020 looking for materials at different stores when the craft demand was at a high. He has believed in me from the start even when I did not believe in myself. Living in an apartment there is only so much space and I would say my signs have definitely taken over haha. In my busy season there will be signs all over the place and different orders I am working on and he never bats an eye, just tells me he is proud of me and his support helps keep me going!
