We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Disla and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
What makes me happy is just doing what I love which is painting, graphic design, and spending time with family and friends. Our passions are important to pursue but also it’s important to not forget the relationships. Those are the people that encourage us on and support us no matter what. I love painting and graphic design because I believe I was created to do it. It brings me true joy to create. I enjoy being with my family and friends because they encourage me and fuel me with love and motivation to keep going.
Landscape and scenery paintings are what I enjoy the most. I believe they have the ability to create experiences for people reminding them of places they’ve been or the places they’d like to go as well as places they would call home or a place of rest. Viewing a landscape piece has the power to arouse all kinds of feelings and reactions.
My favorite aspect of landscape art is that it has the ability to capture a beautiful moment in nature, when the sun beams light a path in a forest or the morning glow of a walk through a flower field. They create stories and moments for us.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe nowadays, in a modern art world, what sets me apart from others is I have an affinity for landscape/scenery paintings, which can be seen as “old” or “traditional”. Although of course I’d strongly disagree with that.
I am most excited about how I’ve grown in my artistic journey over the years. I have finally opened up an online shop and began selling a little more consistently before which is a huge step for me! I’m excited to simply be able to create and have the time to do so.
It’s not easy being a very successful painter unless you go viral on social media or are already a well-known artist. You have to work hard to get your name out there. I’m still exploring overcoming these challenges by building my social media and my website and again, just continuing to paint. It’s easy to get discouraged and to question whether you should even be pursuing the passion you’ve always loved. But what I’ve learned and what I’ve been told by other artists is to “just keep painting”. If you love what you’re doing and keep working at it, the right people will come along and notice and appreciate it.
I want the world to know that I am first and foremost a follower of Christ. I work hard not to become famous or to sell millions of paintings but to steward my God-given gifts well and to glorify Him in my artwork. He is the reason I even have this talent. Without Him, I wouldn’t even have the resources and the ability to pursue this. I love focusing on nature in my artwork simply because it is magnificent. The Lord has given us a beautiful earth to live on. I can only capture a small percentage of the beauty we have the privilege of seeing but I love al the aspects of it, the lights, the colors, the darks, everything.
How kind is it that the Lord not only gives us these talents but we can also find such joy in them.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve only lived in the Fort Worth area since this last October but some of my favorite places to take my friends and family are the Kimbell, the Stockyards, Sundance Square, and the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens! I also love going to all kinds of museums (history, science, art, etc.)! I especially love the Kimbell Art Museum where you can view and study some beautiful original paintings from the old masters such as Claude Monet, Edouard Manet, Peter Paul Rubens, Paul Cezanne, and many more.
In regards to food, I love sushi so one of my favorites so far is the Blue Sushi Sake Grill. My husband and I have also enjoyed the Reservoir on Foch Street and Jon’s Grille on W Berry Street. And if you’re looking for a good ice cream shop, Melt Ice Cream at the Stockyards has become our favorite ice cream spot! Affordable and delicious flavors!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout first and foremost to the Lord. Without Him, I wouldn’t have any of this: my life, my art, or the people beside me cheering me on.
Next to my wonderful husband, Jefferson, who works so hard so that I can have the resources and the freedom and time to paint.
To my loving parents who have always encouraged me to pursue my passions and provided me the means and support to be able to do that. I wouldn’t have gotten this far without them.
And last but not least, to the rest of my dear family and friends who have also always shown their support and love through kind words of encouragement and buying my artwork themselves to hang up in their homes.”
